1. Identification and characterisation of SMIM1 variants determining the Vel blood group
Abstract : The Vel blood group antigen is present on red blood cells from all humans except rare Vel-negative individuals, who can form antibodies to Vel in response to transfusion or pregnancy. It was first described in 1952 as a high incidence antigen, while the molecular background was recently discovered to be a 17-bp deletion in Small Integral Membrane Protein 1, that causes a frame-shift mutation and abolishes SMIM1 expression, thus creating a Vel-negative phenotype. 2. Antibodies during pregnancy : Aspects on complications during pregnancy and complications related to transfusion
Abstract : The fetus acquires half of its genetic infonnation from the father and represents a foreign graft in pregnancy. The overall mechanisms contributing to immunologic tolerance and successful pregancy still are an enigma. Accumulating results of immunologic research, however, offer an explanation for many events in pregnancy. READ MORE

3. Studies on the genetic basis of Pk, P and P1 blood group antigen expression
Abstract : The clinically important carbohydrate P/GLOB blood group systems and collection give rise to both common (P1, P2) and rare (p, P1k, P2k) blood group phenotypes. The associated antibodies are implicated in severe transfusion reactions and recurrent spontaneous abortions. READ MORE

4. Automated serological technique with special emphasis on a solid phase test for red cell antibody detection in routine blood banking
Abstract : Automated serological techniques for erythrocyte antigen typing and antibody screening are presented and evaluated in a larger number of samples and throughout routine processing. Both techniques are microplate-adapted with computerised sample identification, sample and reagent dispensing, and interpretation of results. READ MORE

5. Massive transfusion in relation to obstetric hemorrhage : with special attention to placenta accreta
Abstract : The overall purpose of this thesis was to assess risk factors, incidences, and complications of massive blood transfusions in relation to obstetric hemorrhage postpartum. Obstetric hemorrhage requiring blood transfusion postpartum has recently shown an increasing trend in many high resource countries. READ MORE
