1. The quality of red blood cells and platelets intended for transfusion : Opportunities for improvements
Abstract : A new, automated technique for collection and instant preparation of blood components has been developed. The device enables the combined collection of red cells (250 mL) and plasma (475 mL). No adverse effects were seen in the donors. The blood components were of good quality. READ MORE

2. The dynamics of red blood cells and iron status during infancy
Abstract : Red blood cell (RBC) and iron status biomarkers are commonly used in clinical diagnostics. However, interpretations of infant test results are inherently challenging. READ MORE

3. Acoustofluidic preparation of whole blood components
Abstract : Whole blood is rich in information about the physical state of an individual and is routinely used in a variety of clinical and research applications. In this thesis, the use of a microfluidic technique called acoustophoresis for separation of different blood components is explored. READ MORE

4. Towards a detailed understanding of the red blood cell storage lesion : and its consequences for in vivo survival following transfusion
Abstract : Red blood cells (RBCs) are vital for oxygen delivery to tissues and constitute the vast majority of all cells in blood. After leaving the red bone marrow as mature cells, RBCs have a lifespan of approximately 120 days before they are removed from the circulation by macrophages, mainly in the spleen and liver. 5. Chromatographic Studies of Solute Interactions with Immobilized Red Blood Cells and Biomembranes
Abstract : Specific and non-specific interactions of solutes with immobilized biomembranes were studied using chromatographic methods. Liposomes, proteoliposomes and red blood cell (RBC) membrane vesicles were immobilized by a freeze-thawing procedure, whereas whole RBCs were adsorbed in the gel beds using electrostatic interaction, binding to wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) or the streptavidin-biotin interaction.
