6. Hidden patterns that matter : statistical methods for analysis of DNA and RNA data
Abstract : Understanding how the genetic variations can affect characteristics and function of organisms can help researchers and medical doctors to detect genetic alterations that cause disease and reveal genes that causes antibiotic resistance. The opportunities and progress associated with such data come however with challenges related to statistical analysis. READ MORE

7. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria
Abstract : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 8. Molecular evolutionary studies of genome degradation in bacteria
Abstract : The genus Rickettsia belongs to the α-proteobacteria and consists of obligate intracellular bacteria, which often are pathogenic for humans. All Rickettsia have small genomes, highly adapted to an intracellular lifestyle. READ MORE

9. Apoptosis induced by a human milk protein complex. Cellular and structural studies in tumour cells and bacteria
Abstract : Human milk contains a vast array of bioactive molecules, with nutritional and protective functions. This thesis describes the effects of a human milk protein complex, MAL, on tumour cells and bacteria. During our studies on the anti-adhesive properties of human milk we observed that a milk fraction killed tumour cells. READ MORE

10. Bioremediation of Toxic Metals for Protecting Human Health and the Ecosystem
Abstract : Heavy metal pollutants, discharged into the ecosystem as waste by anthropogenic activities, contaminate drinking water for millions of people and animals in many regions of the world. Long term exposure to these metals, leads to several lethal diseases like cancer, keratosis, gangrene, diabetes, cardio- vascular disorders, etc. READ MORE
