  1. 26. Development of competence in biochemical experimental work : Assessment of complex learning at university level

    Author : Christina Bergendahl; Lena Tibell; Lisbeth Lundahl; Lars-Owe Dahlgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Teaching; experimental work; laboratory based project work; open experiments; biochemistry; life science; university level; action research; course design; aims and objectives; assessment; formative assessment; competence; complex learning; Didaktik; Subject didactics; Ämnesdidaktik; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Biochemistry is part of life science: a fast developing multidisciplinary area. The overall aims of this thesis and the work underlying it were to find ways in which to develop competence in biochemistry at university level and to assess complex learning. A particular interest was the development of experimental work as a means to promote learning. READ MORE

  2. 27. Structural and functional studies of proteins of medical relevance : Protein-ligand complexes in cancer and novel structural folds in bacteria

    Author : Robert Gustafsson; Pål Stenmark; Pavlína Řezáčová; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; X-ray crystallography; Cancer; MTH1; oxidised nucleotides; MTHFD2; nucleotide metabolism; one-carbon metabolism; Botulism; Botulinum neurotoxin; OrfX; OrfX gene cluster; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : X-ray crystallography is a tool for determining the structures of proteins and protein-ligand complexes. In this thesis the method has been employed to study several proteins of medical relevance.Cancer is a terrible disease, severely impacting those affected, as well as their family and friends. 3. 28. Protein–DNA Recognition : In Vitro Evolution and Characterization of DNA-Binding Proteins

    Author : Mikael Nilsson; Mikael Widersten; Dan Tawfik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; In vitro evolution; Phage display; mRNA display; Cro; DNA recognition; repressor; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : DNA-recognizing proteins are involved in a multitude of important life-processes. Therefore, it is of great interest to understand the underlying mechanisms that set the rules for sequence specific protein–DNA interactions. Previous attempts aiming to resolve these interactions have been focused on naturally occurring systems. READ MORE

  4. 29. Serine Hydrolase Selectivity : Kinetics and applications in organic and analytical chemistry

    Author : Anders Hamberg; Karl Hult; Dick Janssen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Candida antarctica lipase B; monoacylation of diols; kinetic resolution; thermodynamics in enzyme catalysis; enzyme engineering; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : The substrate selectivities for different serine hydrolases were utilized in various applications, presented in papers I-VI. The articles are discussed in the thesis in view of the kinetics of the enzyme catalysis involved. READ MORE

  5. 30. Xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes and enzymes involved in the metabolism of reactive oxygen species in the porcine ovary : subcellular distributions and levels of expression during follicular maturation and in the non-pregnant and pregnant corpus luteum

    Author : Maria Eliasson; Thomas Friedberg; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene (DMBA) is metabolized by both porcine ovarian microsomes and mitochondria, with the highest activity being seen in the corpus luteum. Microsomal DMBA monooxygenase activity is inhibited by inhibitors of the CYP450 system and by 17-bestradiol, thus indicating involvement of CYP1B1. READ MORE
