  1. 21. The role of wastewater in surveillance and emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria

    Author : Marion Hutinel; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; Bacteriology; Antibiotic resistance; Surveillance; Horizontal gene transfer; HGT; Conjugation; Plasmids; Epidemiology; CPE; E. coli; Carbapenamase; Linezolid; Colistin; Selection; sul4; OXA-48; gar; NDM; mcr; wastewater; sewage; sewer;

    Abstract : As antibiotic resistance spreads among bacterial pathogens, it reduces treatment options and increases treatment failures of infectious diseases. Strategies employed to reduce this spread or adapt to its consequences need to be based on reliable surveillance data which is lacking in many countries, often due to limited resources. READ MORE

  2. 22. Haemophilus influenzae-induced acute otitis media. Aspects of virulence and protection in an animal model

    Author : Åsa Melhus; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; Microbiology; conjugate vaccine; protection; virulence; acute otitis media; Haemophilus influenzae; animal model; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common illness diagnosed during early childhood. One of the major etiologic agents is Haemophilus influenzae. Apart from AOM, this organism can cause a broad range of infectious diseases such as meningitis, epiglottitis, arthritis, and pneumonia. Despite the importance of H. READ MORE

  3. 23. Streptococcus pneumoniae : epidemiological, clinical and serological studies

    Author : Lars Å. Burman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococcus pneumoniae; incidence; predisposing factors; prognosis; serotyping; etiology of pneumonia; diagnostic methods; COA; CIE; pneumococcal serology;

    Abstract : A retrospective study of invasive pneumococcal disease in patients from Greater Göteborg in 1964- 1980 identified 125 cases of meningitis, 305 of pneumonia, 61 of septicemia with unknown focus, and 17 with other manifestations, all verified by cultures from normally sterile body fluids. The incidence was several times higher in infants and in the elderly than in any other age-group. READ MORE

  4. 24. LYME BORRELIOSIS Detection and identification of the infecting genotype

    Abstract : Lyme borreliosis is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, a bacterium with a parasitic life-style, which is transmitted between hosts by the Ixodes tick-vector. Humans will incidentally become infected. The resulting illness can involve the skin, nervous system, joints and heart. READ MORE

  5. 25. Aspects of Bacterial Resistance to Silver

    Author : Susanne Sütterlin; Åsa Melhus; Björn Olsen; Roland Möllby; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Bacterial resistance to antibiotics has increased rapidly within recent years, and it has become a serious threat to public health. Infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria entail higher morbidity, mortality, and a burden to health care systems. READ MORE
