11. SOUnd-DRIven BIOtechnology
Abstract : Ultrasound has been vastly applied in different areas such as medical imaging and the food industry, but not much attempt has been made to investigate its influence on microorganisms and its potential to be applied in microbial biotechnology. Previous studies show the potential of acoustic waves to increase biomass yield, production of secondary metabolites and enhanced enzyme-catalyzed reactions, probably due to improved mass transfer and cell retention. 12. Interaction engineered three-helix bundle domains for protein recovery and detection
Abstract : HTML clipboard The great advances in DNA technology, e.g. sequencing and recombinant DNA techniques, have given us the genetic information and the tools needed to effectively produce recombinant proteins. Recombinant proteins are valuable means in biotechnological applications and are also emerging as alternatives in therapeutic applications. READ MORE

13. Superabsorbent Polymers from the Cell Wall of Zygomycetes Fungi
Abstract : The present thesis presents new renewable, antimicrobial and biodegradable superabsorbent polymers (SAPs), produced from the cell wall of zygomycetes fungi. The cell wall was characterized and chitosan, being one of the most important ingredients, was extracted, purified, and converted to SAP for use in disposable personal care products designed for absorption of different body fluids. 14. Metabolic Engineering of Recombinant Protein Production by Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Abstract : The yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a widely used cell factory for the production of fuels, chemicals, and it also provides a platform for the production of many heterologous proteins of medical or industrial interest. In this thesis, random and rational approaches, such as vector design, host engineering, fermentation analysis, UV Mutation, coupled with high-throughput systems biology techniques (including whole genomic sequencing, microarray analysis and flux analysis) and integrated analysis (Reporter feature technique), were employed to engineer cellular properties more effectively and purposefully to construct cell factories for protein production. 15. Discovery and investigation of glycoside hydrolase family 5 enzymes with potential use in biomass conversion
Abstract : Glycoside hydrolases (GHs) cleave glycosidic bonds in glycoconjugates, oligosaccharides and polysaccharides such as cellulose and various hemicelluloses. Mannan is a major group of hemicelluloses. READ MORE
