  1. 1. Microbial communities : descriptors of environmental change in marine ecosystems

    Author : Li Zhao; Agneta Andersson; Xiao-Ru Wang; Alexander Eiler; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In northern marginal seas, like the northern Baltic Sea, climate change will lead to many alterations, for example increased inflows of nutrients and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Nutrients and DOM are fundamental drivers shaping marine microbial communities, including both bacterial and phytoplankton populations. READ MORE

  2. 2. Microbial Degradation of Toxaphene

    Author : Martha Lacayo; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Enterobacter; Environmental technology; Bjerkandera; Toxaphene; Biodegradation; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This works deals with the degradation of a group of recalcitrant compounds known as toxaphene. Toxaphene is a complex mixture of chlorinated compounds including hexa- and octachlorocamphenes, hepta-, nona- and decachlorobornanes. Some components of toxaphene are very persistent while others are degraded rapidly by both abiotic and biotic processes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Limitations and possibilities for microbial degradation of organic contaminants in aquifers

    Author : Christel Carlsson; Biologiska institutionen; []

    Abstract : Many factors can influence the rate of microbial degradation of organic contaminants in aquifers. Some of these factors, e.g. READ MORE

  4. 4. Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons; an interdisciplinary study of degradation and distribution in complex environments

    Author : Sofia Åkesson; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Groundwater; Groundwater chemistry; Contamination; Chlorinated solvents; In situ remediation; Biodegradation; PCR; DCIP; CSIA;

    Abstract : In this thesis degradation of chlorinated solvents, e.g., tetrachloroethene (perchloroethylene [PCE]), has been examined, both natural occurring degradation and in situ remediation strategies. READ MORE

  5. 5. Reactors and biosensors for improved microbial degradation of acetonitrile

    Author : Kristina Håkansson; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; denitrification; nitrification; on-line analysis and control; Clark electrode; biosensor; biofilm process; acetonitrile; microbial degradation;

    Abstract : Biodegradation is becoming an attractive mode of operation for eliminating toxic chemicals released from industrial processes or already present in the environment. One needs, however, not only to identify organisms capable of degrading such chemicals, but also to address the issue of whether these chemicals, after being degraded, will be toxic to the degrading organisms if present in high concentrations.
