1. Molecular mechanisms involved in prokaryotic cycling of labile dissolved organic matter in the sea
Abstract : Roughly half of the global primary production originates from microscopic phytoplankton in marine ecosystems, converting carbon dioxide into organic matter. This organic matter pool consists of a myriad of compounds that fuel heterotrophic bacterioplankton. READ MORE

2. The genetics of antibiotic production and the role of antibiotics in biological control of Erwinia amylovora by Erwinia herbicola
Abstract : Erwinia herbicola is an epiphyte of apple and pear with potential as a biocontrol agent of Erwinia amylovora, which causes fire blight. This research aimed to assess the relative role of antibiotics produced by E. herbicola, Eh318 as a mechanistic basis for biocontrol. READ MORE

3. Tetrapyrrole synthesis in Bacillus subtilis
Abstract : This thesis describes tetrapyrrole synthesis in the aerobic Gram positive bacterium Bacillus sub-tilis. Tetrapyrroles such as heme of a-, b-, c-, d- and o-type can be synthesised in this organism. In addition, there is strong evidence for the presence of the tetrapyrrole siroheme in B. subtilis. 4. Cyanobacterial Hydrogen Metabolism : Regulation and Maturation of Hydrogenases
Abstract : In times with elevated CO2 levels and global warming there is a need of finding alternatives to carbon based energy carriers. One such environmental friendly solution could be H2 produced by living organisms. READ MORE

5. Microbe-induced apoptosis in phagocytic cells and its role in innate immunity
Abstract : Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a controlled process by which aged or damages cells are eliminated in multicellular organisms. Neutrophils, short-lived phagocytes of the innate immune system, are highly equipped effectors that can sense, locate, ingest and kill bacterial pathogens. READ MORE
