  1. 6. Distribution and activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in marine and estuarine waters

    Author : Hanna Farnelid; Lasse Riemann; Jonathan Zehr; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; 454-pyrosequencing; diazotrophs; heterotrophic bacteria; marine bacteria; marine microbial ecology; microbiology; nifH; nitrogenase; nitrogen fixation; PCR; qPCR; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : In aquatic environments the availability of nitrogen (N) generally limits primary production. N2-fixing prokaryotes (diazotrophs) can convert N2 gas into ammonium and provide significant input of N into the oceans. Cyanobacteria are thought to be the main N2-fixers but diazotrophs also include a wide range of heterotrophic bacteria. READ MORE

  2. 7. Microorganisms in the atmosphere

    Author : Camilla Fahlgren; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Bacteria are present everywhere around us; in water, soil, food, on our skin, and in the air we breathe, mainly as parts of aerosols (i.e. minute air-suspended particles). Aerosols are mainly composed of sea salt, dust, sulphates and soot but some also contain bacteria, virus, pollen, plant debris and organic matter (i. READ MORE

  3. 8. Antibiotic Resistance in Wastewater : Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)and antibiotic resistance genes

    Author : Stefan Börjesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Johanna Ericson Sollid; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MRSA; SCCmec; spa typing; Staphylococcus aureus; methicillin; B-lactam; aminoglycoside; tetracycline; antibiotic; wastewater; wastewater treatment plant; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : A large part of the antibiotics consumed ends up in wastewater, and in the wastewater the antibiotics may exert selective pressure for or maintain resistance among microorganisms. Antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes encoding antibiotic resistance are commonly detected in wastewater, often at higher rates and concentrations compared to surface water. READ MORE

  4. 9. Molecular characterization of the hepatitis C virus core protein

    Author : Priya Devi; Anders Bergqvist; Björn Olsen; Tanel Punga; Gerald McInerney; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HCV; core protein; SHP-1; CpG methylation; bisulfite sequencing; NGS; PBMC; Ca2 NFAT; strand-specific RT qPCR; Klinisk virologi; Clinical Virology; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Medical Virology; Medicinsk virologi;

    Abstract : Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an RNA virus that causes chronic infection, which can lead to hepatocellular carcinomas in humans. Besides liver diseases, the chronic HCV infection causes a broad spectrum of extrahepatic complications such as lymphoproliferative, metabolic and autoimmune disorders. READ MORE

  5. 10. The discovery of antiviral compounds targeting adenovirus and herpes simplex virus : assessment of synthetic compounds and natural products

    Author : Mårten Strand; Göran Wadell; Mikael Elofsson; Ya-Fang Mei; Lieve Naesens; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; virology; antiviral; adenovirus; herpes simplex virus; small molecule; inhibitor; hsv; drug discovery; medicinsk virologi; Medical Virology; datorlingvistik; computational linguistics; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : There is a need for new antiviral drugs. Especially for the treatment of adenovirus infections, since no approved anti-adenoviral drugs are available. Adenovirus infections in healthy persons are most often associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and infections of the eye. These infections can be severe, but are most often self-limiting.
