  1. 11. Host-pathogen interactions in invasive Staphylococcus aureus infections

    Author : Srikanth Mairpady Shambat; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Staphylococcus aureus is a versatile human pathogen causing a wide range of diseases from uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections to life-threatening invasive diseases like endocarditis, bacteremia, necrotizing pneumonia, and fasciitis. The pathogen has become increasingly resistant to -lactam antibiotics, and of special concern is the rise in community- acquired (CA)-MRSA strains, as specific CA-MRSA clones have been associated with highly aggressive infections. 2. 12. Binding of plasma proteins by Staphylococcus epidermidis: characterisation of protein-protein interactions

    Author : Dai-Qing Li; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; mice and immunisation; biomaterial-associated infections; von Willebrand factor; thrombospondin; clusterin; Staphylococcal receptins; vitronectin; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), in particular, Staphylococcus epidermidis, have emerged as major nosocomial pathogens associated with infections of implanted medical devices. These organisms, which are among the most prevalent bacteria of the human skin and mucous membrane microflora, gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion. READ MORE

  3. 13. Effects of gold- and silver nanoparticles on the retina

    Author : Patrik Maximilian Bauer; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : Microglia; Retina; In vitro; Nanoparticles;

    Abstract : Over the past decade, a massive increase in the use of nanomaterials and nanoparticles (NPs) in both commercial and medical applications has occurred. Medical applications include advanced drug delivery vehicles, imaging and hyper thermic therapies. READ MORE

  4. 14. Studies on two bacterial resistance mechanisms to β-lactam antibiotics : extended spectrum β-lactamases in Klebsiella oxytoca and methicillin resistance in staphylococci

    Author : Shang Wei Wu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Eleven clinical isolates of Klebsiella oxytoca from Stockholm hospitals were found to be resistant to aztreonam and cefuroxime (MIC > 16 mg/L). The resistance was caused by a ß-lactamase with pI 5.25 and designated KH. Assay of the substrate profiles revealed that the KH ß-lactarnase was similar to the chromosomally encoded OXY-2 ß-lactamase. READ MORE

  5. 15. Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of paediatric bloodstream infections 1998-2018 in Stockholm

    Author : Joachim Luthander; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Bloodstream infections (BSI) constitute a common, serious, and potentially preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in children. Good knowledge of epidemiology, aetiology and the occurrence of antimicrobial resistance is essential for early effective empiric antibiotic therapy. READ MORE
