  1. 21. Gene therapy in epilepsy: neuropeptides and neurotrophic factors

    Author : Irene Kanter Schlifke; Lund Wallenberg Neurocentrum; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; piriform cortex; hippocampus; neuropsykologi; encapsulated cells; viral vectors; GDNF; galanin; epilepsy; gene therapy; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common form of epilepsy among adult patients, and the most problematic one as seizures cannot be controlled by currently available drugs in 30 % of patients. Gene therapy based on overexpression of endogenous anti-epileptic agents such as the neuropeptide galanin and the glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) represents a promising new approach for treatment of TLE. 2. 22. Post-Ischemic Housing Conditions Influence On Gene Transcription And Translation After Permanent Focal Brain Ischemia In Rats

    Author : Li-Ru Zhao; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rats; brain-derived neurotrophic factor; mRNA; nerve growth factor-induced gene A; corticosteroid receptors; in situ hybridization; Neurologi; neurophysiology; Neurology; neuropsychology; brain ischemia; enriched environment; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Enriched environment (EE) housing significantly ameliorates neurological deficits induced by cortical brain ischemia without changing infarction size, suggesting that EE-related functional benefits are associated with neuronal plasticity events in the remaining tissue. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor-induced gene A (NGFI-A) and corticosteroid receptors (mineralocorticoid receptor, MR; glucocorticoid receptor, GR) have been demonstrated to be involved in brain plasticity. 3. 23. EMG and strength in trunk and hip muscles

    Author : Eva A Andersson; Alf Thorstensson; Margareta Nordin; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurophysiology; Neurofysiologi; abdominal muscles; biomechanics; electromyography; erector spinae; iliacus; iliopsoas; hip flexor muscles; locomotion; motor control; normalization; posture; psoas; quadratus lumborum; rehabilitation; running; sit-ups; strength; training exercises; u;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to study the myouelectric activity of all major muscles involved in the movements and stabilization of the trunk, pelvis and hips during training exercises, postures, motor tasks, maximal strength performance and locomotion. By use of ultra-sound, EMG electrodes could be guided safely and accurately into muscles situated even close to the spinal column, such as psoas, quadratus lumborum and deep parts of erector spinae. 4. 24. Phospholipase A2 in nerve injury and axonal outgrowth

    Author : Marie Hornfelt; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neurology; cell death; apoptosis; leukotrienes; arachidonic acid; M-type receptor; secretory phospholipase A2; cytosolic phospholipase A2; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; growth cone; axonal outgrowth; nerve injury; peripheral nerve regeneration; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with processes coupled to injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), with a general aim to investigate the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes in axonal outgrowth. The axonal outgrowth of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro was reduced by several different inhibitors of PLA2 activity and enhanced by an activator of this enzyme. READ MORE

  5. 25. Neural circuits engaged in mastication and orofacial nociception

    Author : Tuija Athanassiadis; K-G Westberg; Sten Grillner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; rhythmical jaw movements; central pattern generator; trigeminal system; rabbit; Rat; c-Fos; nociceptors; muscle pain; muscle spindle afferents; glutamate; Neurophysiology; Neurofysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : A deeper understanding of both movement control and the effects of nociceptor inputs on our motor systems is critical for proper clinical diagnosis of musculo-skeletal dysfunctions and for development of novel rehabilitation schemes. In the jaw system, masticatory movements are produced by a central pattern generator (CPG) located in the brainstem. READ MORE
