  1. 21. Failure Monitoring and Asset Condition Assessment in Water Supply Systems

    Author : Dalius Misiunas; Industriell elektroteknik och automation; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mechanical engineering; reglerteknik; robotteknik; Automatiska system; Water supply; failure; detection; monitoring; location; bursts; hydraulics; leakage; asset management; condition assessment; pipelines; pipe networks; Automation; control engineering; robotics; vacuum technology; vibration and acoustic engineering; Maskinteknik; hydraulik; vakuumteknik; vibrationer; akustik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, different aspects of failure management in urban water supply systems are discussed. As assets are getting older, the number of pipe failures is increasing and an efficient failure management strategy becomes important. READ MORE

  2. 22. Chemicals in consumer products : Towards a safe and sustainable use

    Author : Linda Molander; Christina Rudén; Sven Ove Hansson; Mattias Öberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : consumer products; articles; hazardous chemicals; risk management; chemicals regulation; REACH; substitution; regulatory toxicology; European Union;

    Abstract : Health and environmental risks associated with emissions of hazardous chemicals from articles, including everyday consumer products such as clothes and toys, have become widely acknowledged internationally, particularly in the EU. This thesis contributes to new understandings of how these risks are currently managed within the EU and recommends actions for ensuring a safe and sustainable use of chemicals in articles. 3. 23. Water density impact on water flow and mass transport in rock fractures

    Author : Helen Winberg-Wang; Longcheng Liu; Ivars Neretnieks; Andrew Frampton; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Tracer experiments; solute transport in fractured rock; advection-diffusion experiments; repositories; equivalent flowrate.; Spårämnesexperiment; ämnestransport i bergssprickor; advektion och diffusionsexperiment; slutförvar; ekvivalent flöde.;

    Abstract : One way of taking care of spent nuclear fuel is to place it in a geological repository. In Sweden, a three-barrier system is planned. The system is based on encapsulating the fuel in copper canisters. These are surrounded by bentonite clay and buried under 500 m of bedrock. READ MORE

  4. 24. Dam safety in a hydrological perspective-Case study of the historical water system of Sala Silver Mine

    Author : Tina Fridolf; KTH; []
    Keywords : dam safety; design flood; flood mitigation; hydrological; risk assessment;

    Abstract : The old water system in Sala, formerly belonging to thesilver mine, is analysed with regard to dam safety focusing onthe hydrological aspects. The hydrological safety of the riskclass I dams in the area, built in the 16th century, is notconsidered adequate according to the Swedish guidelines fordesign flood determination. READ MORE

  5. 25. Investigations of passive safety systems in LWRs : melt coolability with bottom coolant injection, light gas effects on a passive containment cooling system

    Author : Domenico Paladdino; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The key objectives in introducing passive features in thesafety systems for Light Water Reactor (LWR) are to increasetheir reliability, to simplify the design of the plants and toimprove performance and economics. Component and integralsystem tests in scaled facilities are required for optimizingthe design and for certification of these safety systems. READ MORE
