1. Project Evaluation in Development Cooperation : A Meta-Evaluative Case Study in Tanzania
Abstract : The research reported here is a meta-evaluative case study of project evaluation in the context of Official Development Cooperation (ODC) in the education sector in Tanzania, where the particular focus is on capturing the relative values attached to evaluation by various stakeholder groups.Perspectives from the constructivist paradigm are adopted, implying relativist ontology, subjectivist epistemology, and naturalistic interpretive methodology. 2. Evaluation of HIV testing strategies and monitoring of immune responses in HIV-vaccinated individuals in Tanzania
Abstract : This thesis describes studies on the evaluation of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and simple rapid HIV assays for use in HIV testing strategies in resource-limited settings and studies of HIV vaccine-induced immune responses. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) preparation techniques were also studied in preparation for use in the HIV vaccine trials. READ MORE

3. The Tropospheric Aerosol - Measurements and Modelling. Case studies in Tanzania and Southeast Asia and development of models for size resolved aerosol simulations on the regional scale
Abstract : The tropospheric aerosol is a complex constituent of the atmosphere that has impacts on health and the climate. This thesis presents five different studies from Tanzania, Southeast Asia and Europe dealing with urban measurements of particle mass and elemental composition, regional scale modelling of ozone and particle mass of inorganic aerosols and development of modules for sea salt emissions and size resolved aerosol particles with aerosol dynamical mechanisms implemented in a regional scale chemistry and transport model (CTM). 4. On people, data and systems : perspectives on routine health data processing and its digitalization in Tanzania
Abstract : Background: Facility-based routine health information is captured in health management information systems by health care providers and is the main data source for health system planning and outcome monitoring in Tanzania and other low- and middle-income countries. While this system is fully digitalized in high-income countries, it is still partly paper-based in others. READ MORE

5. HIV-1 infection in Tanzania with special reference to early diagnosis in children and preparations for vaccine trials
Abstract : The studies reported in this thesis aimed at identifying simple, suitable and affordable assays for HIV monitoring and for early diagnosis in children, and establishing the suitability of a potential cohort for HIV vaccine trials in Tanzania. In a field evaluation of three alternative methods for quantification of T-lymphocyte subsets, we found high overall correlation coefficients (r>0. READ MORE
