  1. 1. Evolutionary Consequences of Reproductive Strategies : Testing Theory on Sex and Reproductive Gene Evolution in the Fungal Model Neurospora

    Author : Kristiina Nygren; Hanna Johannesson; Tatiana Giraud; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I used the filamentous ascomycete genus Neurospora as a model to test theoretical predictions on the evolutionary consequences of different reproductive strategies and reproductive gene evolution. The genus Neurospora contains taxa representing a diversity of reproductive strategies, and here I constructed a phylogeny by which I was able to show that several independent transitions in reproductive mode have occurred in the evolutionary history of the genus. 2. 2. Molecular Phylogenetics of Mammals

    Author : Morgan Kullberg; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Genetics; EST; divergence times; phylogenomics; phylogenetic reconstruction; Mammals; Eutheria; cytogenetics; Genetik; cytogenetik;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the phylogenetic relationships of the Mammalia have been studied at various levels. Different sources of genetic information have been evaluated and used as phylogenetic markers. These include the well-known mitochondrial genome, cDNA from housekeeping genes and expressed sequence tags from nuclear genes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Characterization of ERp29 : a novel secretion factor of endoplasmic reticulum

    Author : Ernest Sargsyan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : ERp29 is a ubiquitously expressed endoplasmic reticulum protein strongly conserved in mammalian species. The N-terminal domain of ERp29 is similar to the thioredoxin domain of protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) lacking however the double-cysteine active site motif. The C-terminal domain is a novel five-helical fold. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of Mammalian Poly(A) Polymerase Activity

    Author : Ann-Charlotte Thuresson; Barklie Clements; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biomedicine; poly A polymerase; PAP; polyadenylation; isoforms; phosphorylation; alternative splicing; CPSF interaction; aminoglycosides; Biomedicin; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology;

    Abstract : Poly(A) polymerase (PAP) is the enzyme catalyzing the synthesis of the adenine tail to the 3’-end of mRNA. This A-tail is present on the majority of the primary RNA transcripts of protein-coding genes, and is important for mRNA stability, export to the cytoplasm and translation. Therefore, PAP is a key regulator of eukaryotic gene expression. READ MORE
