6. Water-in-diesel emulsion and microemulsion fuels -The effect of water on emission levels
Abstract : Water-in-diesel emulsions are known as environmentally favourable alternatives to conventional diesel fuel. Introducing water into the combustion results in reduced emissions of the health hazardous components nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The concept of using emulsions is advantageous as it is easy to replace regular diesel. READ MORE

7. Spark Ignition Combustion of Direct Injected Alternative Fuels
Abstract : Several technologies and modifications exist to increase the fuel efficiency of passenger vehicles in general and spark ignition engines in particular. Combining a spark ignition engine with an electric drive system in hybrid powertrain and thermodynamic cycle improvements are two such approaches with the potential to greatly reduce fuel consumption. 8. On the Impact of Piston Motion and In-Cylinder Charge Composition on Energy Release, Auto Ignition and Emission Formation in Premixed Charge Internal Combustion Engines
Abstract : The results presented in this thesis can be divided into four areas of investigation: Investigation of the effect of new volume-crank angle relations on engine emissions, power and efficiency; investigation of nitrogen oxides effect on auto ignition and knock in SI engines; investigation of premixed SI and HCCI engine operation with the alternative fuels hydrogen and reformed methanol gas (RMG); software development of a detailed chemical kinetics zonal engine model. Model development of the in-house two-zone chemical kinetic code focused on expansion of the Jacobian matrix to allow simulations of variable in-cylinder charge. READ MORE

9. Engine Optimized Turbine Design
Abstract : The focus on our environment has never been as great as it is today. The impact of global warming and emissions from combustion processes become increasingly more evident with growing concerns among the world’s inhabitants. The consequences of extreme weather events, rising sea levels, urban air quality, etc. READ MORE

10. DME and the Heavy Duty Diesel Engine
Abstract : Increasing awareness of adverse anthropogenic environmental effects, such as the effectsof combusting fossil fuels on atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations, and thatcombustion-related emissions from the transportation sector are going to approachsustainable levels in the near future has led to increased interest in fuels from renewablesources. These fuels offer possibilities to diversify the feedstocks that can be used forfuel production, as well as to reduce fossil carbon dioxide emissions, thereby reducingour dependence on a very limited range of sources.
