  1. 16. The Anabolic - Anti-catabolic Paradigm of Augmenting Skeletal Regeneration: A Bone Quality Perspective

    Author : Neashan Mathavan; Avdelningen för Biomedicinsk teknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bone fracture; Fracture healing; bone quality; Bone biomechanics; bone morphogenetic protein-7; Zoledronate; skeletal regeneration;

    Abstract : Successful fracture repair is a complex series of coordinated processes leading to regeneration of new bone to bridge the fracture site, remodelling of the newly formed bone and restoration of skeletal function. Disruption of these processes occurs in approximately 10% of all fractures and leads to delayed or failed healing requiring surgical interventions, increased complication rates, prolonged rehabilitation and high morbidity. 2. 17. Physical activity, bone density, and fragility fractures in women

    Author : Undis Englund; Ulrika Pettersson Kymmer; Peter Nordström; Gustaf Bucht; Karl Obrant; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; physical activity; bone density; neuromuscular function; fragility fractures; women; Geriatrics and medical gerontology; Geriatrik och medicinsk gerontologi; Geriatrics; geriatrik;

    Abstract : Scandinavia has among the highest incidence of fragility fractures in the world. The reasons for this are unknown, but might involve differences in genetic and/or environmental factors, such as sunlight exposure and levels of physical activity. READ MORE

  3. 18. Bone turnover markers and prediction of bone loss in elderly women

    Author : Janaka Lenora; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone turnover markers; DXA; elderly; osteoporosis; scintigraphy; Bone mineral density; quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus; bone loss;

    Abstract : Around 70,000 osteoporosis-related fractures occur in Sweden annually and approximately half of the women in western world will sustain a fragility fracture after the age of 50 years. Fracture preventive efforts require the identification of individuals who are at high risk. READ MORE

  4. 19. Physical activity, bone gain and sustainment of peak bone mass

    Author : Taru Tervo; Anna Nordström; Peter Nordström; Jon Karlsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : BMD; physical activity; men; athletes; trabecular bone; cortical bone; self-perceived health; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Weak and osteoporotic bones are an increasing cause of mortality and painful physical impairment among the elderly, especially in the Western world. Bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) accrual during childhood and adolescence is thought to influence an individual’s risk of osteoporosis and the related fractures. READ MORE

  5. 20. Effects of silicon on bone. Clinical observations and experimental cell studies

    Author : Catarina Magnusson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; silicon; osteoclast; pregnancy; lactation; bone metabolism; bone regeneration;

    Abstract : Bone health has a major impact on life quality. In Sweden, osteoporosis is a highly prevalent skeletal disease that primarily affects the elderly, causing fragility fractures and pain. READ MORE
