  1. 11. Women's and Men's Health care utilisation from a cost perspective

    Author : Ingrid Osika Friberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sex; Gender; Health care economics and organisations; Health care costs; Dialysis; Eczema; Psoriasis; Sweden;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to explore sex differences in health care utilisation and costs (i) in a region in Sweden, (ii) in treatment of dialysis patients across the region, and (iii) in the treatment of specified dermatological diagnoses at an outpatient specialist clinic. Data were retrieved from medical records and health care and pharmaceutical databases, including cost estimates and survey data, and were analysed stratified by sex. READ MORE

  2. 12. Interaction between biomaterials and innate immunity with clinical implications

    Author : Shan Huang; Kristina Nilsson Ekdahl; Charlotte Dahle; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Complement system; contact system; blood; biomaterials; biocompatibility; in vitro screening; iC3; dialysis;

    Abstract : Today there is an increasing clinical demand and expectation of patients for biomaterials, which underscores the importance of discovering the correlations between biomaterials and biological systems, especially blood. When an artificial material makes contact with blood, the first event is a rapid adsorption of plasma protein on the material surface, on top of which the innate immune system is triggered, with potentially detrimental consequences. 3. 13. Biological effects of glucose degradation products in peritoneal dialysis fluids

    Author : Peter Jonasson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Peritoneal dialysis; glucose degradation products; peritonitis; peritoneum; neutrophils; macrophages; vital microscopy; microcirculation; complement; leukocyte recruitment; respiratory burst.;

    Abstract : Background: It is well known that Peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids have biological effects on a number of cells and tissues in the peritoneum and the peritoneal cavity. However, little attention has been paid to the influence of glucose degradation products (GDPs), formed during heat-sterilization and storage of PD fluids. READ MORE

  4. 14. Anticoagulants in kidney disease

    Author : Frida Welander; Anders Själander; Henrik Holmberg; Emöke Dimény; Marie Evans; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Anticoagulants; atrial fibrillation; chronic kidney disease; dialysis; DOAC; ischemic stroke; major bleeding; nephrotic syndrome; venous thromboembolism; warfarin.; Medicine; medicin;

    Abstract : Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and atrial fibrillation (AF) are at high risk of ischemic stroke. Evidence is lacking if patients with advanced CKD or on dialysis benefit from oral anticoagulants (OAC) as stroke prophylaxis. READ MORE

  5. 15. Lipoprotein lipase in hemodialysis patients and healthy controls : effects of heparin

    Author : Birgit Näsström; Per-Ola Attman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : dalteparin; dialysis; lipoprotein metabolism; LMWH; LPL; triglycerides; UFH; uremia; medicinsk och fysiologisk kemi; Medical and Physiological Chemistry;

    Abstract : Mortality from cardiovascular disease in patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) is 10 to 20 times greater than in the general population. One major risk factor is renal dyslipidemia, characterised by an impaired catabolism of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins with accumulation of atherogenic remnant particles. READ MORE
