  1. 1. On obesity in acute pancreatitis

    Author : Ralf Segersvärd; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Acute pancreatitis; animal; cytokines; dietary fats; fatty liver; endotoxin; hypertriglyceridemia; interleukines; lipopolysaccharides; liver diseases; mice; mortality; obesity; oxidative stress; pancreas; survival; tumor necrosis factor; rats; UCP2; uncoupling proteins.;

    Abstract : Over-nutrition is one of today s most visible public health problems. Currently over 40% of the Swedish population is either overweight or obese. Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an acute inflammatory process of the pancreas with variable involvement of regional tissues and/or remote organ systems. READ MORE

  2. 2. Metabolic variation in autoimmune diseases

    Author : Rasmus Kirkegaard Madsen; Johan Trygg; Thomas Moritz; Torbjörn Lundstedt; Matej Oresic; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Rheumatoid Arthritis; Diabetes Mellitus type 1; Metabolic Profiling; Metabolomics; Chemometrics; Multivariate Data Analysis; Mass Spectrometry; biologisk kemi; biological chemistry;

    Abstract : The human being and other animals contain immensely complex biochemical processes that govern their function on a cellular level. It is estimated that several thousand small molecules (metabolites) are produced by various biochemical pathways in humans. READ MORE

  3. 3. On angiogenesis modulation

    Author : Mattias Kalén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : During evolution, the transition from unicellular to multicellular organisms required the origin of a transport system capable of interconnecting specialized cells throughout the body of the organism. In higher animals, this route of transportation is the cardiovascular system, which allows gas exchange, and transport of immune cells, hormones, macromolecules, nutrients and waste products. 4. 4. An epidemiological and virological study on mosquito-borne flavivirus transmission : The role of urban livestock keeping and the risk for mosquito-borne zoonotic diseases in humans in Hanoi city, Vietnam

    Author : Thang Nguyen-Tien; Johanna Lindahl; Åke Lundkvist; Richard Paul; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : urban flavivirus; mosquito-borne diseases; livestock keeping; urban Vietnam; Southeast Asia.; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs), which are transmitted by the bite of mosquitoes to humans, are causing high morbidity and mortality worldwide and are emerging in many tropical cities. Urban livestock keeping is still growing in cities around the world, which can itself contribute to increasing the mosquito populations. READ MORE

  5. 5. C5a Receptor Expression in Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock

    Author : Mia Furebring; Jan Sjölin; Per Folllin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; C5a receptor; granulocyte; severe sepsis; septic shock; chemotaxis; anti-C5a treatment; ex vivo incubation; C5a; interleukin-8; LPS; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : In patients with sepsis, the activation of the cascade systems, for example the complement system with the generation of C5a, is followed by a state of immunosuppression with impaired bactericidal capacity caused by suppression of the neutrophil granulocytes. To inhibit the C5a-induced systemic inflammatory and the following anti-inflammatory responses, different anti-C5a strategies have been successful in experimental models of sepsis. READ MORE
