  1. 16. Host-bacteria interactions : Host cell responses and bacterial pathogenesis

    Author : Nele de Klerk; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Teresa Frisan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Host-bacteria interaction; Helicobacter pylori; Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Lactobacillus; Epithelial cells; Macrophages; EGR1; Amphiregulin; SabA; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach, where it causes gastritis that may develop into peptic ulcer disease or cancer when left untreated. Neisseria gonorrhoeae colonizes the urogenital tract and causes the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. READ MORE

  2. 17. Production, Purification and Characterization of Antimicrobial Biomolecules from Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria

    Author : Sahar Deraz; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Lactobacillus; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; bacteriocin purification.; inhibitory activity; Bacteriocin; antimicrobial protein;

    Abstract : Development and optimization of the production of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and their attendant 'natural' inhibitors as biopreservatives to control undesirable bacteria currently remains a primary focus of several laboratories involved in research concerning food safety and quality. Strategies utilized to study incorporation of biopreservatives into food include either direct use of LAB-strains or use of a biopreservative preparation in the form of previously fermented product or use of semipurified, purified, or chemically synthesized bacteriocins. 3. 18. Helicobacter spp. interactions with mucins: adhesion and mucin regulation of pathogen proliferation and gene expression

    Author : Emma C Skoog; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Helicobacter; mucin; glycosylation; Lactobacillus; adhesion; proliferation; gene expression; CagA; SabA; BabA; ArsS; Fur;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori colonizes the gastric mucosa of approximately half of the world’s population and is a risk factor for gastritis, peptic ulcers and gastric cancer. H. pylori is surrounded by, and adheres to, the heavily glycosylated mucins that build up the mucus layer. The carbohydrate structures on the mucins that act as ligands for H. READ MORE

  4. 19. Evolution of symbiotic lineages and the origin of new traits

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the genomic study of symbionts of two different groups of hymenopterans: bees and ants. Both groups of insects have major ecological impact, and investigating their microbiomes increases our understanding of their health, diversity and evolution. READ MORE

  5. 20. The female genital tract microbiota: composition, relation to innate immune factors, and effects of contraceptives

    Author : Natalia Nikolaitchouk; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : bacterial vaginosis; checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridisation; cytokines; SLPI; Lactobacillus coleohominis; Lactobacillus iners; Actinomyces urogenitalis;

    Abstract : Abnormal vaginal microbiota, as in bacterial vaginosis (BV), is associated with increased risk of obstetrical and gynaecologic complications and acquisition of sexually transmitted diseases. However, very little is known about the pathogenesis of BV. In BV, the normal vaginal Lactobacillus-dominated biota (LDB) is replaced by anaerobic bacteria. READ MORE
