  1. 1. Polymer Nanocomposites in Thin Film Applications

    Author : Linda Fogelström; Anders Hult; José M. Kenny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanocomposites; hyperbranched polymers; montmorillonite; clay nanoparticles; exfoliated; coatings; crosslinking; TEM; XRD; mechanical properties; thermal properties; cellulose nanofibers; Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization; Ring-Opening Polymerization; poly ε-caprolactone ; surface modification; grafting; interfacial adhesion; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The introduction of a nanoscopic reinforcing phase to a polymer matrix offers great possibilities of obtaining improved properties, enabling applications outside the boundaries of traditional composites. The majority of the work in this thesis has been devoted to polymer/clay nanocomposites in coating applications, using the hydroxyl-functional hyperbranched polyester Boltorn® as matrix and montmorillonite clay as nanofiller. 2. 2. Free Volume and Mesopores in Polymer Nanocomposites

    Author : Petra Winberg; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Chemical technology and engineering; Kompositmaterial; Composite materials; Macromolecular chemistry; permeability ; membrane ; positron annihilation ; fumed silica ; clay ; mesopores ; polymer nanocomposites ; free volume ; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Makromolekylär kemi;

    Abstract : The free volume in polymers is coupled to several important physical properties, such as density, viscosity and gas diffusivity. The physical properties of polymers close to a solid surface have been shown to be significantly perturbed as compared to their bulk state. READ MORE

  3. 3. Melt flow and surface stability effects on polymer flammability : A study on polystyrene, flexible polyurethane foam and polyolefin composites

    Author : Roland H. Krämer; Ulf W. Gedde; Norman C. Billingham; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Melt; flow; dripping; collapse; combustion; pool fire; feed‐back; gasification; heat release; flammability; nanocomposites; molar mass; intumescence; polyurethane; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : Our ability to accurately determine the flammability properties of polymers is hampered bythe erratic effects of deformation and liquid flow that occur during polymer combustion.This study aims to improve the understanding of such effects at several levels: The often obvious impact of melt flow on standardized flammability test methods forelectrical appliances is described to identify the need and to motivate others to worktowards an improved material characterization. 4. 4. Protein-based Packaging Films, Sheets and Composites: Process Development and Functional Properties

    Author : Sung-Woo Cho; Mikael Hedenqvist; Amar K. Mohanty; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; wheat gluten; solution casting; compression molding; extrusion; injection molding; aging; migration; opacity; heat sealability; hemp fiber; laminate; polylactic acid; clay; nanocomposites.; Other chemical engineering; Övrig kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The depletion of the petroleum resources and a number of environmental concerns led to considerable research efforts in the field of biodegradable materials over the last few decades. Of the diverse range of biopolymers, wheat gluten (WG) stands out as an alternative to synthetic plastics in packaging applications due to its attractive combination of flexibility and strength, high gas barrier properties under low humidity conditions and renewability.
