  1. 1. Physiology of Adventure Racing : with emphasis on circulatory response and cardiac fatigue

    Author : C. Mikael Mattsson; Björn Ekblom; Keith P George; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular drift; cardiac fatigue; adventure race; cardiac biomarkers; cardoac function; exercise echocardiography; Physiology; Fysiologi; Cardiology; Kardiologi; Sports; Idrott; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : The overall aims of this thesis were to elucidate the circulatory responses to ultra-endurance exercise (Adventure Racing), and furthermore, to contribute to the clarification of the so called “exercise-induced cardiac fatigue” in relation to said exercise. An Adventure race (AR) varies in duration from six hours to over six days, in which the participants have to navigate through a number of check-points over a pre-set course, using a combination of three or more endurance/outdoor sports, e. 2. 2. Thermal physiology and metabolism : Interplay between heat generation and energy homeostasis

    Author : Gustavo Abreu-Vieira; Jan Nedergaard; Eric Ravussin; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Mammal metabolism is intimately connected to the maintenance of body temperature. While metabolic pathways invariably produce heat as a by-product, the natural heat present in the environment also plays a role in defining the adaptive metabolism and general physiology of an organism. 3. 3. Studies on stress in African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) : Stress associated cortisol and prolactin levels, lymphocyte modulation and pathological changes in adrenal cortex, stomach and hippocampus in the African green monkey (C. aethiops)

    Author : Mbaruk Abdalla Suleman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; adrenal cortex; capture; confinement; cortisol; husbandry; housing; hippocampus; lymphocytes; prolactin; stomach; stress; wild; African green monkeys; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : African green monkeys (AGMs) are highly susceptible to captivity-induced stress. An investigation of spontaneous deaths of laboratory confined AGMs at the Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi, Kenya over a period of 7.5 years documented mild to severe gastric mucosal erosions and ulcers in 83 of 260 (32%) necropsies. 4. 4. Heart and lung function - in health and disease : methodological studies in clinical physiology

    Author : Sofia Erelund; Nina Sundström; Urban Wiklund; Sandra Arvidsson; Bengt Johansson; Carl-Johan Carlhäll; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; clinical physiology; reference materials; ECG; dynamic spirometry; HRV; rheumatoid arthritis; cardiovascular disease; ischemic heart disease; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Abstract : The human heart and lungs constitute an intricate and dynamic system. Various clinical physiological examinations can be used to evaluate cardio-pulmonary function and identify abnormalities. Thus, it is important to understand how normal physiology presents, to be able to identify pathological findings. READ MORE

  5. 5. Aspects of aqueous humor dynamics : Studies in vivo and in vitro

    Author : Maria Samuelsson-Almén; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology and anatomy; Aqneous humor flow; intraocular pressure; adenylate cyclase; nonpigmented ciliary epithelium; pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide; vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; dopamine; prostaglandin; Fysiologi och anatomi; Physiology and pharmacology; Fysiologi och farmakologi; Physiology; fysiologi;

    Abstract : The purpose of the present investigation was to study the effects of PGF2α-l-isopropylester, some neuropeptides, and pharmacological agents on aqueous humor dynamics and intraocular pressure (IOP) in vivo and on adenylate cyclase activity in the nonpigmented ciliary epithelium (NPE) in vitro.Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) caused a dose-dependent increase in cAMP formation, indicating that the NPE contains receptors for PACAP and VIP coupled to adenylate cyclase activation.
