12. Alloys in Contact with Molten Salts for Thermal Storage Applications
Abstract : The combination of a concentrated solar power (CSP) plant and a thermal energy storage (TES) system is a promising technology for power generation, in that it overcomes the challenges commonly faced by renewable energy systems, such as intermittency, dispatchability, and the gap between the energy supply and energy demand. The third generation (Gen3) CSP plants are designed to increase plant efficiency by using supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) instead of steam for the Brayton cycle gas turbines, requiring a minimum operating temperature of 750°C for the TES materials. 13. Combined heat and power plants in decarbonized energy systems: Techno-economics of carbon capture and flexibility services at the plant, city and regional levels
Abstract : Our present energy system is the main driver of climate change. Variable renewable electricity generation and carbon dioxide removal (CDR) are key technologies in the transformation to a sustainable energy system, but their broad implementation implies challenges related to energy system flexibility and energy requirements of CDR technologies. 14. Efficient Trading in the Short-term Electricity Markets for Integration of Renewable Energy Sources : Multistage Stochastic and Agent-based Modeling Approaches for Continuous Intraday Electricity Market
Abstract : This thesis investigates the role of different short-term electricity market design aspects that can facilitate better coordination of resources within the power system. The work also emphasizes on better cross-border integration of the short-term markets to improve the market liquidity, competition, social welfare, and flexibility in the system, which is essential for facilitating the integration of renewable sources.
