  1. 1. Boning up on Vitamin D : Observational Studies on Bone and Health

    Author : Greta Snellman; Karl Michaëlsson; Haakon Meyer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Vitamin D; fracture; BMD; assays; genes; mortality; cohort studies; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : The primary function of vitamin D in humans is to maintain sufficient circulating calcium concentrations. Low vitamin D levels could result in excessive calcium resorption from bone. Vitamin deficiency may therefore decrease bone mineral density (BMD), resulting in an increased risk of fracture. READ MORE

  2. 2. Genetic and Environmental Influences on Bone and Fractures

    Author : Helene Wagner; Karl Michaëlsson; Håkan Melhus; Nancy Pedersen; Kristina Åkesson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; heritability; twin study; osteoporotic fractures; vertebral fractures; balance; bone mineral density; bone area; bone markers; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : Sweden and Norway have the worldwide highest incidence of osteoporotic fractures. As these fractures constitute a tremendous and growing problem, primary prevention is of great importance. The principal causes of an osteoporotic fracture are a fall and a fragile skeleton. READ MORE

  3. 3. Form and Finish of Implants in Uncemented Hip Arthroplasty : Effects of Different Shapes and Surface Treatments on Implant Stability

    Author : Stergios Lazarinis; Nils P. Hailer; Lars Weidenhielm; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Form; Finish; Total hip arthroplasty; Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register; Hydroxyapatite; RSA; DXA; BMD; Stability.; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi;

    Abstract : The design of an uncemented hip arthroplasty implant affects its long-term survival. Characteristics such as the form and the finish of the implant are crucial in order to achieve the best possible conditions for long-term implant survival. READ MORE

  4. 4. Fixation of the cemented acetabular component in hip arthroplasty

    Author : Gunnar Flivik; Lund Ortopedi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi; orthopaedics; reumatologi; Surgery; Skelett; muscle system; rheumatology locomotion; Skeleton; Cement pressurization; Cement penetration; Acetabulum; Cancellous bone; muskelsystem; Total hip arthroplasty; RSA;

    Abstract : In total hip arthroplasty cemented fixation of the acetabular component is a generally successful concept, but the rate of aseptic loosening and consequent revision surgery is still too high. One of the crucial factors for longterm implant survival is the initial fixation and stability. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the Diagnosis and Treatment of Lumbar Spinal Stenosis

    Author : Konstantinos Pazarlis; Peter Försth; Bengt Sandén; Nikos Schizas; Karl Michaëlsson; Christian Hellum; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; lumbar spinal stenosis; spine surgery; decompression; fusion; sagittal balance; electrodiagnosis; neurophysiology; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi; Neurology; Neurologi; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is the most common indication for spinal surgery. The aging global population is increasing the demand for strategies that promote physical activity among the elderly. As the prevalence of LSS rises, the condition gains constantly demographic and socioeconomic attention. READ MORE
