  1. 1. Stringed along or caught in a loop? : Philosophical reflections on modern quantum gravity research

    Author : Keizo Matsubara; Lars-Göran Johansson; Holger Lyre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; quantum gravity; string theory; loop quantum gravity; philosophy of physics; philosophy of science; scientific realism; structural realism; multiverse; thought experiments; Theoretical Philosophy; Teoretisk filosofi;

    Abstract : A number of philosophical questions, all connected to modern research in quantum gravity, are discussed in this dissertation.The goal of research in quantum gravity is to find a quantum theory for gravitation; the other fundamental forces are already understood in terms of quantum physics. 2. 2. Quest for quantum signatures in Axion Dark Matter and Gravity

    Author : Vasileios Fragkos; Igor Pikovski; Ingemar Bengtsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Axion Dark Matter; Gravity; Quantum mechanics; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : This licentiate thesis in theoretical physics focuses on the existence of quantum features in physical systems such as axion dark matter and gravity. Our focus is mostly on effects which appear at low energies, a regime in which our models can be confronted with current experiments or within the foreseeable future. READ MORE

  3. 3. Making Maps and Keeping Logs : Quantum Gravity from Classical Viewpoints

    Author : Niklas Johansson; Ulf Danielsson; Jan de Boer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String theory; black holes in string theory; Calabi-Yau geometry; flux compactifications; three-dimensional gravity; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis explores three different aspects of quantum gravity. First we study D3-brane black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory. Using the OSV conjecture and a relation between topological strings and matrix models we show that some black holes have a matrix model description. READ MORE

  4. 4. Scattering Amplitudes in Supersymmetric Quantum Chromodynamics and Gravity

    Author : Gregor Kälin; Henrik Johansson; Lance J. Dixon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scattering Amplitudes; Supersymmetric Gauge Theory; Supergravity; Quantum Chromodynamics; Physics and Astronomy specializing in Theoretical Physics; Fysik och astronomi med inriktning mot teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : Quantum field theory is a theoretical framework for the description of nature in terms of fundamental particles, fields and their interactions. In the quantum regime, elementary scattering processes are observables in many experiments and studied in theoretical physics. READ MORE

  5. 5. Plasma Oscillations in Holographic Quantum Matter

    Author : Marcus Tornsö; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; holography; quasinormal modes; gauge gravity duality; graphene; strong coupling; plasmonics; strongly correlated media;

    Abstract : In this thesis we explore strongly correlated matter in the framework of holographic duality. Specifically, we examine the quasinormal modes of such systems, and we extend the current framework to efficiently and naturally cover plasmons and other collective modes that may be found within strongly correlated matter.
