  1. 1. The impact of loading-induced stress variation on the seismicity of active faults

    Author : Yiting Cai; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; stress variation; Coulomb stress change; subduction zone; Seismicity;

    Abstract : Surface loads such as the ocean, atmosphere, and continental water, constantly modify the stress field of the Earth’s crust. Most earthquakes occur at tectonic plate boundaries and such stress perturbations on the active faults at the plate boundaries may trigger earthquakes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Seismicity Analyses Using Dense Network Data : Catalogue Statistics and Possible Foreshocks Investigated Using Empirical and Synthetic Data

    Author : Angeliki Adamaki; Roland Roberts; Beata Orlecka-Sikora; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical Seismology; Earthquake Catalogue Statistics; Seismicity Patterns; Precursors; Foreshocks; Στατιστική Σεισμολογία; Κατάλογοι Σεισμών; Μοτίβα Σεισμικότητας; Πρόδρομα Φαινόμενα; Προσεισμοί; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : Precursors related to seismicity patterns are probably the most promising phenomena for short-term earthquake forecasting, although it remains unclear if such forecasting is possible. Foreshock activity has often been recorded but its possible use as indicator of coming larger events is still debated due to the limited number of unambiguously observed foreshocks. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mining induced seismicity in Sweden

    Author : Kristina Larsson; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mining and Rock Engineering; Gruv- och Berganläggningsteknik;

    Abstract : The virgin stress state in the rock mass is disturbed by mining, which leads to locally increased or decreased stresses. The rock mass in Sweden is generally composed of high strength brittle rock types, so the risk of seismicity and rockbursts (violent failures) increase with increasing depth of mining due to increasing stress levels. 4. 4. Seismological Investigation of Katla Volcanic System (Iceland) : 3D Velocity Structure and Overall Seismicity Pattern

    Author : Zeinab Jeddi; Ari Tryggvason; Olafur Gudmundsson; Heidi Soosalu; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Volcano tomography; volcano seismicity; Katla volcano; Earthquake location; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : The work in this thesis concentrates on Katla volcano in southern Iceland. This is one of Europe’s most active volcanoes and its history tells us that it poses many threats to society, both locally (Iceland) and on a broader scale (Europe). READ MORE

  5. 5. Location and Relocation of Seismic Sources

    Author : Ka Lok Li; Ólafur Gudmundsson; Roland Roberts; Ari Tryggvason; Lars Ottemöller; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earthquake location; Earthquake relocation; Tremor location; Bayesian inversion; Correlation; Earthquake catalog; Iceland; Seismicity; Interferometry; Inverse theory; Volcanic tremor; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Abstract : This dissertation is a comprehensive summary of four papers on the development and application of new strategies for locating tremor and relocating events in earthquake catalogs.In the first paper, two new strategies for relocating events in a catalog are introduced. READ MORE
