16. Synthesis, properties and applications of chalcogen-containing antioxidants
Abstract : In the first part, the preparation and properties of chalcogen-containing vitamin E analogues are described. The sulfur compound 3,3,4,6,7-pentamethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophene-5-ol was prepared by two different routes using ionic and radical chemistry. Interesting rearrangements were observed in the two synthetic pathways. READ MORE

17. Poly-and oligothiophenes : Optical probes for multimodal fluorescent assessment of biological processes
Abstract : One interesting class of molecules in the research field of imaging biological processes is luminescent conjugated polythiophenes, LCPs. These fluorescent probes have a flexible backbone consisting of repetitive thiophene units. READ MORE

18. Dyes and their adsorption onto nanocrystalline TiO2 electrodes : Synthesis, characterisation and applications
Abstract : The syntheses of two type of dyes (phthalocyanine and ruthenium tris-bipyridyl) are presented here. Their characterisation involves the use of cyclic voltammetry, NMR- and UV-visible spectroscopy. Once adsorbed on nanocrystalline TiO2 electrodes, their electrochemical, spectroelectrochemical and photoelectrochemical properties were investigated. READ MORE

19. The Alzheimer Aβ Peptide : Identification of Properties Distinctive for Toxic Prefibrillar Species
Abstract : Proteins must have specific conformations to function correctly inside cells. However, sometimes they adopt the wrong conformation, causing dysfunction and disease. A number of amyloid diseases are caused by misfolded proteins that form amyloid fibrils. One such disease is Alzheimer’s disease (AD). READ MORE

20. Synthesis of Organic Chromophores for Dye Sensitized Solar Cells
Abstract : This thesis deals with development and synthesis of organic chromophores for dye sensitized solar cells. The chromophores are divided into three components; donor, linker and acceptor. The development of efficient organic chromophores for dye sensitized solar cells starts off with one new organic chromophore, D5. READ MORE
