  1. 21. CARDIOTHORACIC TRAUMA: A Scandinavian Perspective

    Author : Moheb A. Rashid; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Cardiothoracic trauma; Trauma; Extrapleural hematoma; Sternal fractures; Heart and lung contusions; Cardiac; pulmonary; and thoracic aortic injuries; Urgent or emergency room department thoracotomy; Sternotomy; Paraplegia; Outcome.;

    Abstract : Background: Trauma in general is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, and causes more loss of productive years than ischemic heart disease and malignancy together. Cardiothoracic trauma occurs in 60% of multitrauma patients and is 2-3 times more common than intra-abdominal visceral injuries. READ MORE

  2. 22. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique

    Author : Morteza Rohani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Ultrasound; atherosclerosis; flow mediated dilatation; endothelial function; carotid arteries; thoracic aorta; brachial artery; coronary artery disease; nicotine; snuff; prednisolone; rheumatoid arthritis;

    Abstract : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. READ MORE

  3. 23. Aortic aneurysms and dissections. A clinical follow-up after surgery

    Author : Vincenzo Lepore; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Aortic aneurysm; aortic dissection; composite-graft; aortic arch replacement; aortic endoluminal stent-graft; Marfan syndrome; MRI.;

    Abstract : ABSTRACTThe purpose of this study was to report on the results after aortic surgery on thoracic aneurysms and dissections and to study the feasibility of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the follow-up after aortic surgery. In this thesis, 203 patients ungergoing surgery on the thoracic aorta between 1977 and 2000 are included. READ MORE

  4. 24. On Pathophysiology and Treatment of Aortic Disease

    Author : Marek Kuzniar; Kevin Mani; Gustaf Tegler; Anders Wanhainen; Tomas Hansen; Kak-Khee Yeung; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Abdominal aortic aneurysm; aortic dissection; fenestrated branched stent grafts; PET; molecular imaging; inflammation; Kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Pathophysiological processes underlying abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation and aortic dissections (AD) are largely unknown. Molecular imaging of the inflammatory component may improve our understanding of AAA and AD pathophysiology. READ MORE

  5. 25. Cholesterolinduced changes in macro- and microvessels in rabbits : effects of antioxidants

    Author : Anna Freyschuss; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cholesterol; rabbits; oxidative; antioxidants; vessels; microcirculation;

    Abstract : A hyperlipidemic state induced by cholesterol feeding results in changes in both the structure and function of macro- and microvessels in rabbits. It has been proposed that oxidative modification of lipoproteins might be an important pathophysiological mechanism explaining these effects of hyperlipidemia. READ MORE
