  2. 2. Reading the Sky : From Starspots to Spotting Stars

    Author : Urban Eriksson; Cedric Linder; John Airey; Andreas Redfors; Edward E. Prather; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Astrometry; Astronomy Education Research; Disciplinary Discernment; Extrapolating three-dimensionality; Reading the Sky; Physics with specialization in Physics Education; Fysik med inriktning mot fysikens didaktik;

    Abstract : This thesis encompasses two research fields in astronomy: astrometry and astronomy education and they are discussed in two parts. These parts represent two sides of a coin; astrometry, which is about constructing 3D representations of the Universe, and AER, where for this thesis, the goal is to investigate university students’ and lecturers’ disciplinary discernment vis-à-vis the structure of the Universe and extrapolating three-dimensionality. 3. 3. Visual and tactile neglect

    Author : Haukur Hjaltason; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Visual neglect; tactile neglect; premotor neglect; perceptual neglect; bisection tasks; darkness; tactile exploration; right hand use; right hemisphere activation; three-dimensionality; figure-ground contrast; chronic;

    Abstract : Neglect patients typically fail to report, respond, or orient to information presented in locations further away from the side of the brain lesion. Neglect is most often reported after acute stroke, and is more severe and more frequent after right hemisphere damage. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modelling and simulation of paper structure development

    Author : Stefan B Lindström; Tetsu Uesaka; Myat Htun; Cyrus Aidun; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Forming; Fibre; Paper; Fibre suspension; Paper structure; Simulation; Rheology; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik; Engineering physics; Teknisk fysik;

    Abstract :      A numerical tool has been developed for particle-level simulations of fibre suspension flows, particularly forming of the fibre network structure of paper sheets in the paper machine. The model considers inert fibres of various equilibrium shapes, and finite stiffness, interacting with each other through normal, frictional, and lubrication forces, and with the surrounding fluid medium through hydrodynamic forces. 5. 5. Stability and transition on wind turbine blades

    Author : Thales Coelho Leite Fava; Ardeshir Hanifi; Dan Henningson; Stefania Cherubini; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Boundary layer stability; free-stream turbulence; laminar-turbulent transition; low-frequency oscillations; rotation effects; wind turbine blades.; Gränsskiktsstabilitet; friströmsturbulens; laminär-turbulent omslag; lågfrekventa svängningar; rotationseffekter; vindkraftverksblad.; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : Transition on wind turbine blades is a highly complex phenomenon due to the myriad effects influencing the process. This thesis studies some of them, namely free-stream turbulence (FST), rotation, and three-dimensionality. The investigations employ large eddy simulations (LES) with and without (implicit or wall-resolved LES) a subgrid-scale model. READ MORE
