11. Platelet activation and tissue factor release in hemolytic uremic syndrome
Abstract : Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a clinical syndrome characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. There are two subtypes: typical HUS associated with enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) and atypical HUS associated with uninhibited activation of the alternative pathway of complement. READ MORE

12. Studies on antibodies against phospholipids
Abstract : The main clinical features of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APLS) are arterial and venous thrombosis, repeated spontaneous abortions and thrombocytopenia. Diagnosed concomitant with an underlying disease the designation is secondary APLS; otherwise primary APLS. READ MORE

13. Interphase cytogenetics and cytokine therapy in myelodysplastic syndromes and acute myeloid leukemia
Abstract : Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) comprise a group of clonal hematopoietic bone marrow cell disorders, characterized by a variable degree of anemia, granulocytopenia and/or thrombocytopenia and with a substantial risk of transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (MDS-AML). In the present thesis a method based on fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was developed which allows cytogenetic studies on morphological identified peripheral blood and bone marrow cells (MGG/FISH). 14. ADAMTS13 phenotype in health and disease with special reference to thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
Abstract : Von Willebrand factor (VWF) is synthesized and secreted by endothelial cells into the plasma as a series of multimers. VWF induces the formation of platelet plugs at sites of vascular injury and high shear stress. Biological activity is dependent on multimeric size, which is regulated in plasma by the VWF-cleaving protease ADAMTS13. READ MORE

15. Cancer and autoimmunity: two sides of the same coin. Complement system proteins in the regulation of immune responses
Abstract : Factor H is an inhibitor of the complement system, essential for controlling the alternative pathway and also playing a crucial role in various cellular functions. In this thesis, we identified new intriguing functions of FH as a survival factor for primary human monocytes, promoting their differentiation into immunosuppressive macrophages. READ MORE
