2. Aspects of beta cell and thyroid autoimmunity in children
Abstract : The two most common autoimmune endocrine diseases in children are autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Autoantibodies (ab) can be found several years before clinical diagnosis in both diseases. READ MORE

3. Aspects of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in children and adolescents
Abstract : The aims of this thesis were to 1) compare different methods for detection of antibodies against thyroglobulin (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb), particulary in children with chronic autoimmune thyroditis (AIT), 2) investigate if maternal enterovirus infection is a risk factor for development of AIT in offspring, 3) ascertain the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in cord blood sera from children who later developed AIT, 4) develop a new reference standard for interpretation of normative thyroid volumes in Swedish children, and 5) evaluate the effect of Levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) treatment on thyroid size in children and adolescents with AIT. We found that 1) Methods based on radioimmunoassay (RIA) were more efficient in detecting both TgAb and TPOAb in children with AIT than methods based on agglutination. READ MORE

4. Autoimmunity in glomerulonephritis; serological diagnosis and clinical outcome with special reference to Wegener´s granulomatosis and microscopic polyangiitis
Abstract : Autoantibodies of different specificites have been described in association with glomerulonephritis and therefore the aim of this thesis was to improve our knowledge of the different manifestations of autoimmune phenomena which are involved in the glomerulonephritides. Special reference is made to Wegener´s granulomatosis (WG) and microscopic polyangiitis (MP) which are frequently associated with the prevalence of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA). 5. Polyglandular Autoimmune (PGA) Syndromes and associations to sarcoidosis
Abstract : Polyglandular Autoimmune (PGA) syndrome type II in idiopathic Addison's disease: In a retrospective study of idiopathic Ad-dison's disease (median age at diagnosis 32.5 years, range 8-62; median observation time 17 years, range 0.5-41), 50% met the criteria for PGA syndrome type II. In PGA syndrome type II, 73% had ATD and 41% had IDDM. READ MORE
