  1. 11. Emerging tick-borne pathogens: on the ecology of multiple infections in ticks and reservoir hosts

    Author : Martin Andersson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Borrelia afzelii; ’Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis’; bank vole; Myodes glareolus; multiple infection; tick-borne diseases; vector-borne diseases; competition; facilitation; qPCR;

    Abstract : Most animals will encounter several more or less severe infectious diseases during their lifetime, and simultaneous infections with more than one pathogen, or several different strains of the same pathogen, are common in natural populations. Ticks transmit a wide variety of different pathogens and can also be simultaneously infected with more than one pathogen. READ MORE

  2. 12. A STING from a Tick : Epidemiology, Ecology and Clinical Aspects of Lyme Borreliosis

    Author : Peter Wilhelmsson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Pia Forsberg; Sven Bergström; Christina Ekerfelt; Jeremy S. Gray; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Lyme borreliosis (LB) is the most common tick-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere and the number of LB cases is increasing. The infection is caused by spirochetes belonging to the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex, and is, in Europe, transmitted to humans by Ixodes ricinus ticks. READ MORE

  3. 13. Epidemiological and Ecological Studies of Tick-borne Encephalitis Virus

    Author : Pontus Lindblom; Per-Eric Lindgren; Pia Forsberg; Mats Haglund; Jan Ernerudh; Sarah E Randolph; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Ticks are blood-sucking parasites that are an inconvenience for both humans and animals. The tick by itself is normally harmless unless they attack in excessive numbers. READ MORE

  4. 14. Host-seeking activity of Ixodes ricinus in relation to the epidemiology of Lyme borreliosis in Sweden

    Author : Hans Mejlon; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Borrelia burgdorferi; control; Ixodes ricinus; Lyme borreliosis; seasonality; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Entomology; entomologi;

    Abstract : This thesis examines seasonal, diel and vertical distribution patterns of activity of host-seeking Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks at three localities in south-central Sweden. In addition, by examining the prevalence of infection in ticks with Lyme borreliosis (LB) spirochetes, Borrelia burgdorferi s. READ MORE

  5. 15. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens

    Author : John H.-O. Pettersson; Thomas Jaenson; Sven Bergström; Kenneth Nilsson; Mikael Thollesson; Per-Eric Lindgren; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Flavivirus; Virus dating; Molecular dating; Biogeography; Ixodes ricinus; Minimum infection rate; TBE; Tick-borne encephalitis virus; Rickettsia helvetica; Anaplasma phagocytophilum; Infection prevalence; RT-PCR; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Abstract : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. READ MORE
