    Abstract : Haematophagous parasites and disease vectors such as leeches, ticks, mites, lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and myiasis-causing fly larvae are common health problems in Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR). A main aim of my field work in Lao PDR in 2006-2010 was to document traditional knowledge among different ethnic groups about plants that people use to repel or to kill blood-feeding invertebrates. 2. 22. Ticking off the ungulate box : the role of different ungulate species in the transmission of tick-borne pathogens

    Author : Nannet Fabri; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Ungulates play a central role in the life cycle of Ixodes ricinus, an important vector of tick-borne pathogens, and several ungulate species are increasingly common across Europe. I investigated the role of these different species in the spread of I. ricinus-borne pathogens. READ MORE

  3. 23. Applications of viral metagenomics in the veterinary field : looking for the unknown

    Author : Anne-Lie Blomström; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Viral metagenomics provide a powerful technology to investigate the viral flora of healthy and sick animals. Using these methodologies, we gain a better understanding in the etiology of diseases, as well as deepen our knowledge into the viruses circulating in nature and the complex interaction between virus and host. 4. 24. Plants as Sources of Natural and Effective Acaricides : Against Ixodes ricinus  (Acari: Ixodidae)

    Author : Fawzeia Elmhalli; Giulio Grandi; Richard Wall; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acaricidal; Ixodes ricinus; Libyan plants; essential oils; Plant-derived acaricides.; Biology with specialization in Systematics; Biologi med inriktning mot systematik;

    Abstract : Ticks and tick-borne diseases are major health hazards worldwide, with increasing numbers of cases of Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis reported yearly. Meanwhile, concerns about the environmental impact and safety of chemical acaricides are driving research into alternative control methods, such as plant-based acaricides. READ MORE

  5. 25. Molecular characterization of the Tick-borne encephalitis virus : Environments and replication

    Abstract : The flavivirus genus is of major concern for world morbidity and mortality and includes viruses causing both encephalitic as well as hemorrhagic diseases. The incidence of Tick-borne encephalitis is increasing in many European countries and several reports have emphasized the expansion of the main vector, Ixodes ricinus. READ MORE
