  1. 1. Travelling through time : Students’ interpretation of evolutionary time in dynamic visualizations

    Author : Jörgen Stenlund; Lena Tibell; Konrad Schönborn; Niklas Gericke; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Evolution; visualization; time; learning; threshold; zooming;

    Abstract : Evolutionary knowledge is important to understand and address contemporary challenges such as loss of biodiversity, climate change and antibiotic resistance. An important aspect that is considered to be a threshold concept in teaching and learning about evolution is the time it involves. READ MORE

  2. 2. Biased Evolution : Causes and Consequences

    Author : Gerrit Brandis; Diarmaid Hughes; Erik Böttger; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; Codon usage bias; Post-transcriptional regulation; Recombination; Inversion; EF-Tu; Frameshift suppression; Antibiotic resistance; Rifampicin; Ciprofloxacin; Compensatory evolution; Drug efflux; RNA polymerase; DNA gyrase; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : In evolution alternative genetic trajectories can potentially lead to similar phenotypic outcomes. However, certain trajectories are preferred over others. These preferences bias the genomes of living organisms and the underlying processes can be observed in ongoing evolution. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mapping incomplete relational data : networks in ecology & evolution

    Author : Daniel Edler; Martin Rosvall; Alexandre Antonelli; Renaud Lambiotte; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; network science; information theory; map equation; community detection; biogeography; evolution;

    Abstract : We live in an interconnected world full of complex systems that cannot be understood simply by analyzing their components. From how genes regulate biological functions to the distribution of life on Earth, we need methods that can analyze systems as a whole. READ MORE

  4. 4. Sculpted through Time : Evolution and Function of Serine Proteases from the Mast Cell Chymase Locus

    Author : Maike Gallwitz; Lars Hellman; Lars Pilström; Urban Gullberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Immunology; immune system; mast cell; chymase locus; serine protease; evolution; gene duplication; Immunologi;

    Abstract : Immune cells like NK cells, T cells, neutrophils and mast cells store high amounts of granule serine proteases, graspases. Graspases are encoded from the mast cell chymase locus. The human locus holds four genes: α-chymase, cathepsin G, and granzymes H and B. In contrast, the mouse locus contains at least 14 genes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Visualizing the abyss of time : Students’ interpretation of visualized deep evolutionary time

    Author : Jörgen Stenlund; Konrad Schönborn; Lena Tibell; Gunnar Höst; Camillia Matuk; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Deep evolutionary time; Visualization; Evolution; Science Education; Djup evolutionär tid; Visualiseringar; Naturvetenskapernas didaktik;

    Abstract : The immense time scales involved in Deep evolutionary time (DET) is a threshold concept in biology and interpreting temporal aspects of DET is demanding. DET is communicated through various visualizations that include static two-dimensional representations, low interactivity animations, as well as high interactivity interfaces. READ MORE
