  1. 1. Temporomandibular joint disk displacement and subsequent adverse mandibular growth : a radiographic, histologic and biomolecular experimental study

    Author : Fredrik Bryndahl; Annika Isberg; Lars Eriksson; Lars G Hollender; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adolescence; adverse growth; condylar cartilage; subchondral bone; TMJ; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : The mandibular condyles represent important growth sites within the facial skeleton. Condylar growth is not a pacemaker of mandibular development, but it provides regional adaptive growth that is of considerable clinical significance, as the condyle’s upward and backward growth movement regulates the anteriorly and inferiorly directed displacement of the mandible as a whole. 2. 2. Pain and disability in the jaw and neck regions after whiplash trauma : a short- and long-term perspective

    Author : Ewa Lampa; Birgitta Häggman-Henrikson; Anders Wänman; Erik Nordh; Malin Ernberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Jaw pain; Neck Pain; Neck disability; Orofacial pain; Psychosocial factors; Temporomandibular disorders; TMD; Temporomandibular joint; TMJ; Whiplash injury; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Whiplash trauma, a hyperextension-flexion trauma to the neck that is often related to a car accident, affects tens of thousands in Sweden every year. A significant proportion will develop long-term symptoms including neck pain and dysfunction – this is embraced as Whiplash associated disorders (WAD). READ MORE

  3. 3. Calcitonin gene-related peptide in temporomandibular inflammation

    Author : Joakim Carleson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CGRP; Calcitonin gene-related peptide; neuropeptides; inflammation; temporomandibular joint; masseter muscle; TMJ; TMD; nociception; scratching; neurogenic inflammation.;

    Abstract : Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is an important biological mediator and cell-signalling molecule, involved in modulation of the immune system, inflammatory response and pain modulation. During pain and inflammation, sensory nerves are activated, and sensory neuropeptides such as CGRP is released from peripheral and central nerve endings. READ MORE

  4. 4. Local and systemic inflammatory mediators and their relation to pressure-pain threshold and pain of the temporomandibular joint

    Author : Lars Fredriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The first aim of this investigation was to investigate the validity of TMJ pressure-pain threshold for assessment of pain conditions of inflammatory nature in the TMJ. Pressure-pain threshold was recorded from the palpable lateral pole of the TMJ condyle with a hand-held electronic pressure algometer (Somedic Production AB, Sollentuna, Sweden). READ MORE

  5. 5. Temporomandibular joint pain and tissue destruction in relation to inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Neveen Ahmed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ACPA;

    Abstract : The general aim of this thesis was to study temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and bone tissue destruction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), in particular: pro- and anti‐inflammatory cytokines, systemic inflammatory activity, and the impact of TMJ pain on daily activities and quality of life. This thesis comprises three parts. READ MORE
