  1. 1. Induction of operational tolerance to allografts and xenografts

    Author : Matthias Corbascio; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; serology; Immunology; allograft; xenograft; heart transplantation; tolerance; anti-LFA-1; CTLA4Ig; anti-CD40L;

    Abstract : Inhibition of the costimulatory molecules B7 and CD40L with CTLA4Ig and anti-CD40L administered only during the first week after transplantation induces indefinite survival of allo- and xenogeneic heart transplants and significantly prolongs skin grafts in C3H mice. However, this treatment protocol is not as effective in C57BL/6 mice which reject skin transplants with nearly the same median survival time as untreated controls. READ MORE

  2. 2. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS

    Author : Malin Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; PARP-1; tolerance; global gene expression; apoptosis; cerebral blood flow;

    Abstract : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 3. 3. Tolerance and Immunity: Opposite Outcomes of Microbial Antigen Stimulation

    Author : Lena Eroukhmanoff; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TLR2; Tolerance; quinoline-3-carboxamide; Anergy; Foxp3; iNOS; IFN-β; CD4 splenic DCs;

    Abstract : The immune system is remarkable in many ways. It exerts immunity to defend us from foreign pathogens, while it is also responsible for maintaining tolerance to avoid autoimmune diseases and allergy. This thesis includes three separate papers concerning both tolerance and immunity. READ MORE

  4. 4. T cell Tolerance - Cellular and molecular features of immune regulation

    Author : Susanna Grundström; Immunologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi; serology; Immunology; JAK STAT.; NFkB; suppression; IL-2; superantigen; T cells; tolerance;

    Abstract : The immune system has evolved regulatory mechanisms in order to balance the effects of deleterious immune responses. Such immunological tolerance may be specifically acquired by lymphocytes, although different cells of the immune system participate in the induction and maintenance of tolerance. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tolerance and antagonism to allopregnanolone effects in the rat CNS

    Author : Sahruh Turkmen; Inga-Maj Johansson; Agneta Nordberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Allopregnanolone; GABA-A receptor; UC1011; Spatial memory; Morris Water Maze; Tolerance; Silent second; mRNA; Obstetrics and gynaecology; Obstetrik och gynekologi;

    Abstract : Many studies have suggested a relationship between sex steroids and negative mental and mood changes in women. Allopregnanolone, a potent endogenous ligand of the GABA-A receptor and a metabolite of progesterone, is one of the most accused neuroactive steroids. READ MORE
