  1. 21. Gene silencing mechanisms in Phytophthora infestans

    Author : Vetukuri Ramesh; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The hemibiotrophic oomycete, Phytophthora infestans, causes late blight on potato and tomato. This destructive pathogen is well known for the rapidity with which it overcomes host resistance. This thesis focuses on the molecular basis of gene (RNA) silencing in P. infestans and the role it may have in its genome biology and pathogenesis. READ MORE

  2. 22. Mechanisms and genes controlling the signalling network for biotic and abiotic stress defences in Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heyhn : Functional cross-talk between photo-produced reactive oxygen species, photosynthesis and plant disease defence responses

    Author : Christine Chi-Chen Chang; Stanislaw Karpinski; Christine Foyer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; reactive oxygen species; Arabidopsis thaliana; signalling work; biotic stress; abiotic stress; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : Excess excitation energy, mechanical injury and defence against pathogens, each trigger rapid production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. ROS, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), are required for the induction of systemic acquired acclimation and may lead to redox changes in photosynthetic electron transport (PET). READ MORE

  3. 23. Tailoring residue-derived carbon materials for the removal of wastewater contaminants : adsorption and surface properties

    Author : Mirva Niinipuu; Stina Jansson; Jean-Francois Boily; Erik Rosenbaum; Magnus Bergknut; Capucine Dupont; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Adsorption; hydrochar; HTC; chemical activation; wastewater; pharmaceuticals; metals; surface properties; biobased residues;

    Abstract : The availability of effective, low-cost wastewater treatment is necessary for increased water recycling and the prevention of environmental pollution on a global scale. Adsorption on activated carbons is commonly applied in wastewater treatment, but the high cost of conventional activated carbons limits the use of this technique. READ MORE

  4. 24. Size matters : RNA silencing processes in Phytophthora infestans

    Author : Anna Åsman; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Non-coding RNAs do not encode proteins but instead function through their own RNA sequence. These molecules range from several thousands of nucleotides (nt) in length down to around 20 nt. Specifically, small RNAs (sRNAs) have critical functions in eukaryotic cells, despite being only 20-30 nt long. READ MORE

  5. 25. Plant Oxylipins and Lipid Transfer Proteins in Defense : - It’s all about the fat

    Author : Per Fahlberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Oxylipins, the oxygenated metabolites of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are found in many eukaryotic organisms. In plants, several enzymes can produce different types of oxylipins, and the chloroplast structural galactolipids mono- and digalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG and DGDG, respectively) are examples of sources of substrate PUFAs.
