36. Solute exhange across the alveolo-capillary barrier
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study the transfer of solutes across the alveolo-capillary barrier in experimental models of alveolar surfactant dysfunction and lung injury as well as in smokers. Experimental studies were performed in anaesthetized, and mechanically ventilated animals. READ MORE

37. The mode of action of the radiosensitizing analogs metoclopramide and nicotinamide
Abstract : This thesis provides the first attempt to study the nicotinamides and benzamides from a mode of action point of veiw. Understanding the effects on DNA repair, cell cycle control (proliferation) and cell death from these agents and in combination with ionizing radiation, provides a new opportunity to logically develop better approaches to sensitize already existing therapies via for example induction of apoptosis or inhibition of DNA repair. 38. Myocardial Perfusion and Function: Comparative assessment by ECG, SPECT and MRI
Abstract : Evaluation of myocardial perfusion and function is important in management of patients with suspected or known coronary artery disease. This thesis focuses on the use of common diagnostic methods, myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (MPS) and electrocardiography (ECG), to enhance and validate the diagnostic information. 39. Effects of high intensity focused ultrasound on the intervertebral disc
Abstract : The purpose of this study was to study and try to optimise high intensity focused ultrasound treatment of the intervertebral disc. We demonstrated that it was possible to heat intervertebral discs with HIFU delivered by 50 or 5 mm diameter ultrasound transducers. READ MORE

40. Ultrasound and atherosclerosis. Evaluation of methods, risk factors and intervention
Abstract : The importance of studying cardiovascular disease before the process leads to hard end-points has been recognised, and methods to quantify early atherosclerosis have been taken in use in many research centres around the world. An ultrasound method with a computer assisted image analysing system was developed in co-operation with the Wallenberg Laboratory for Cardiovascular Research and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
