  1. 1. Mechanisms of phagocytosis resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes

    Author : Heike Kotarsky; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; fibrinogen; FHL-1; Factor H; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; phagocytosis;

    Abstract : A distinguishing feature of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is their ability to resist phagocytosis in whole human blood in the absence of type-specific antibodies, a property that is dependent on the expression of the surface associated M proteins. A common characteristic of M proteins is their interaction with a variety of host proteins including the complement regulatory protein factor H (FH) and fibrinogen that plays a key role in coagulation. 2. 2. Surface proteins of pathogenic streptococci

    Author : Thomas Areschoug; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; Microbiology; factor H; complement regulator; CD89; human IgA; protective immunity; surface protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; group B streptococcus;

    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus) and the group B streptococcus (GBS) are two important human pathogens that cause different types of diseases and express different surface structures implicated in virulence. This thesis focuses on several surface proteins expressed by these pathogens, analyzing the biological function of these proteins and their ability to elicit protective immunity. READ MORE

  3. 3. Recurrent Streptococcal Pharyngotonsillitis Studies on etiology and treatment

    Author : Arne Orrling; Lund näs- och halssjukdomar Öron-; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; auditive system and speech; Otorinolaryngologi; Infektioner; Otorhinolaryngology; Infections; Clindamycin.; Penicillin tolerance; Tonsillar surface fluid; treatment failure; Group A streptococci; hörsel- och talorganen; audiologi; audiology; Recurrent streptococcal pharyngotonsillitis;

    Abstract : In acute pharyngotonsillitis group A streptococci (GAS) is the etiological agent in 30-50% of cases. Phenoxymethylpenicillin (pcV) is the drug of choice in Sweden. However, the failure rate is as high as 5-25% and further pcV treatment is followed by still higher failure rates. The background of failures remains largely elusive. READ MORE

  4. 4. Streptococcus pyogenes and its interactions with the human host

    Author : Ulrika Ringdahl; Institutionen för immunteknologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infections; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; plasminogen; fibrinogen; phagocytosis; platelet; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; Mikrobiologi; mycology; Infektioner; Immunology; serology; transplantation; Immunologi; serologi;

    Abstract : We have found that a set of group A streptococcal strains, primarily associated with skin infections, express surface-associated M proteins that bind plasminogen and plasmin with high affinity. The binding is mediated by a common 13 amino acid internal repeated sequence located in the NH2-terminal surface-exposed portion of these M proteins. READ MORE
