    Abstract : Streptococcus pyogenes is a common human pathogen causing mild infections such as tonsillitis and pharyngitis, but is also the cause of life-threatening conditions. To be able to infect the human host, S. pyogenes express different virulence factors. The surface-expressed M protein is a major virulence factor of S. READ MORE

  2. 12. Invasive group A streptococcal infection : host and pathogen interactions

    Author : Björn K G Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Group A streptococci; invasive infections; erysipelas; Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome STSS ; epidemiology; M1 serotype streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins Spe ; SpeA; toxin neutralization; opsonization;

    Abstract : Invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infections were studied in 229 patients with a clinical diagnosis of erysipelas and 151 patients with GAS bacteremia, respectively. Beta-hemolytic streptococci were identified in about a third of the erysipelas patients, mostly group A, whereas group G streptococci were identified in about half as many episodes. READ MORE

  3. 13. Superantigens in group A streptococcus : gene diversity and humoral immune response

    Author : Linda Maripuu; Mari Norgren; Susan Hollingshead; Umeå universitet; []

    Abstract : Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a strictly human pathogen that causes infections ranging from asymptomatic carriage to the highly lethal streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). GAS are classified according to the sequence of the variable 5’ end of the emm-gene that encodes the surface associated M-protein. READ MORE

  4. 14. Quality, costs and the role of primary health care

    Author : Sven Engström; Lars Borgquist; Ingvar Krakau; Linköpings universitet; []

    Abstract : The general aim of this thesis is to describe and analyse the role of primary care in health care systems in terms of health, health care utilisation and costs, and to study the feasibility of retrieval of data from computerised medical records to monitor medical quality.The thesis includes five studies, a systematic literature review, a register study of utilisation of hospital and primary care, a study based on data from computerised medical records of individual patients cost for primary care, and two studies of management of respiratory infections in primary care based on data from computerised medical records of twelve health centres. 5. 15. Clinical, immunological and olfactory aspects of sinusitis and nasal polyposis : with special reference to patients with cystic fibrosis

    Abstract : The otorhinolaryngological approach to the problem concerning rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis in the recessive genetic disorder of cystic fibrosis (CF) has been developed based on data from international studies. Opinions differ on how to treat the otolaryngological manifestations of CF (sinusitis, nasal polyps and hyposmia). READ MORE
