1. Anti-epileptic and neuroprotective mechanisms by Topiramate and Levetiracetam evaluated in primary cultures
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to evaluate plausible intracellular mechanisms of action for antiepileptic drugs, Topiramate (TPM) and Levetiracetam (LEV), and to investigate if TPM possesses neuroprotective properties. The thesis is based on results from calcium imaging, immunohistochemical stainings, viability tests, and Western blot using primary cortical or hippocampal cultures, or hippocampal brain slices. 2. Experimental studies on novel pharmacological strategies in the treatment of schizophrenia
Abstract : The modified dopamine (DA) hypothesis of schizophrenia suggests a hyperdopaminergic state in subcortical brain regions, which is believed to cause positive symptoms, while cortical regions may show a hypodopaminergic state which is believed to generate negative and cognitive symptoms. Positive symptoms are improved by typical antipsychotic drug (APD) treatment. READ MORE

3. Modulation of prefrontal glutamatergic transmission and 'atypicality' of antipsychotic drugs
Abstract : The glutamate hypothesis of schizophrenia suggests a relationship between hypoactive NMDA receptor-mediated glutamatergic transmission and the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Previous results have demonstrated that atypical (e.g. clozapine, risperidone, and olanzapine), but not typical (e. READ MORE

4. Maternal deprivation and mood stabilizing drugs : effects on rat brain NPY
Abstract : Experiences of early adverse life events are more frequent among adult depressed patients than healthy subjects. Studies with non-human primates and rats show that maternal deprivation leads to changes in hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA)-axis activity/reactivity and increased levels of anxiety and alcohol preference. 5. Newer antiepileptic drugs in women of child-bearing age : pharmacokinetic studies during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and contraception
Abstract : Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder, affecting men and women almost equally. It has been estimated that 0.3 to 0.4% of pregnant women have epilepsy. READ MORE
