  1. 1. Geometric and Topological Phases with Applications to Quantum Computation

    Author : Marie Ericsson; Ignacio Cirac; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physics; geometric phases; topological phases; quantum computation; mixed states; completely positive maps; Fysik; Physics; Fysik; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Quantum phenomena related to geometric and topological phases are investigated. The first results presented are theoretical extensions of these phases and related effects. Also experimental proposals to measure some of the described effects are outlined. READ MORE

  2. 2. Renormalization of Lorenz Maps

    Author : Björn Winckler; Marco Martens; Michael Benedicks; Welington de Melo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mathematical analysis; Analys;

    Abstract : This thesis is a study of the renormalization operator on Lorenz αmaps with a critical point. Lorenz maps arise naturally as first-return maps for three-dimensional geometric Lorenz flows. Renormalization is a tool for analyzing the microscopic geometry of dynamical systems undergoing a phase transition. READ MORE

  3. 3. Indoor Navigation for Mobile Robots : Control and Representations

    Author : Philipp Althaus; KTH; []
    Keywords : mobile robots; robot navigation; indoor navigation; behaviour based robotics; hybrid deliberative systems; dynamical systems approach; topological maps; symbol anchoring; autonomous mapping; human-robot interaction;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with various aspects of indoor navigationfor mobile robots. For a system that moves around in ahousehold or office environment,two major problems must betackled. First, an appropriate control scheme has to bedesigned in order to navigate the platform. Second, the form ofrepresentations of the environment must be chosen. READ MORE

  4. 4. Making Maps and Keeping Logs : Quantum Gravity from Classical Viewpoints

    Author : Niklas Johansson; Ulf Danielsson; Jan de Boer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; String theory; black holes in string theory; Calabi-Yau geometry; flux compactifications; three-dimensional gravity; Mathematical physics; Matematisk fysik; Theoretical Physics; teoretisk fysik;

    Abstract : This thesis explores three different aspects of quantum gravity. First we study D3-brane black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIB string theory. Using the OSV conjecture and a relation between topological strings and matrix models we show that some black holes have a matrix model description. READ MORE

  5. 5. Homotopy Theory and TDA with a View Towards Category Theory

    Author : Sebastian Öberg; Wojciech Chachólski; David Blanc; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Homotopy theory; Topological Data Analysis; Category theory; Mapping spaces; Homotopy commutative diagrams; Matematik; Mathematics;

    Abstract : This thesis contains three papers. Paper A and Paper B deal with homotopy theory and Paper C deals with Topological Data Analysis. All three papers are written from a categorical point of view.In Paper A we construct categories of short hammocks and show that their weak homotopy type is that of mapping spaces. READ MORE
