  1. 1. Trade-off between starvation and predation : Weight-watching in Yellowhammers

    Author : Ineke T. van der Veen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : In this thesis I show that captive yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella) strategically adjusted their level of body mass and diurnal trajectory of mass increase to experimentally increased predation risk. During winter, small birds need large fat reserves to survive the night. Therefore, they build up fat reserves every day. READ MORE

    Abstract : A strategic issue for any industrial company is to conceive safe and reliable systems while performing all systems’ intended functions at a minimum cost. System safety and reliability are fundamental to system design and involve a quantitative assessment prior to system development. READ MORE

  3. 3. Growth versus the Environment - Is There a Trade-off?

    Author : Per Kågeson; Miljö- och energisystem; []

    Abstract : This book shows that the intensity of use of energy and materials in OECD countries is diminishing over time despite falling metal and energy prices. Material demand is sometimes falling in absolute terms, but there are also a few examples of rapid growth. READ MORE

  4. 4. Comparative Population Ecology in Moor Frogs with Particular Reference to Acidity

    Author : Fredrik Söderman; Anssi Laurila; Jacob Höglund; Juha Merilä; J.W (Pim) Arntzen; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : This thesis is an attempt to describe how different environmental factors influence life history traits in different populations, sexes and developmental stages in the moor frog, Rana arvalis. The studied populations are located along 1100 km latitudinal gradient, with pH varying between 4.0 and 8.5. READ MORE
