  1. 21. New insights into the role of ppGpp and DksA through their effect on transcriptional regulation of housekeeping and colonization related genes of Escherichia coli

    Author : Anna Åberg; Carlos Balsalobre; Anne Farewell; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Escherichia coli; type 1 fimbriae; fimB; phase variation; transcription; global gene regualtion; ppGpp; DksA; gre-factors; RNA polymerase; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Bacteria have the ability to sense different environmental signals. When an environmental stress is detected, bacteria rapidly adjust their gene expression profile to be able to survive and thrive. READ MORE

  2. 22. The interplay of transcription and chromatin regulation during embryonic development

    Author : George Hunt; Mattias Mannervik; Eileen Furlong; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transcription; chromatin; chromatin-modifiers; p300 CBP; Polycomb repression; promoter proximal Pol II pausing; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : A fascinating aspect of multicellular development is the production of diverse cell types from an identical DNA genome, which depends on the ability to express different complements of genes across space and time. This thesis tries to address how the genome, within the chromatin structure that envelops it, is regulated to direct this complex process. READ MORE

  3. 23. Prognostic Factors in Malignant Melanoma

    Author : Åsa Bolander; Michael Bergqvist; Simon Ekman; Anders Larsson; Daniel Brattström; Gunnar Wagenius; Torgny Rasmuson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Malignant melanoma; prognostic factors; survival; chemotherapy; radiation;

    Abstract : Because of the failure so far to find effective treatment for patients with advanced stages of melanoma, increasing efforts have been made to find prognostic factors identifying patients in the risk zone for development of metastasis.This thesis investigates the prognostic powers of a few selected serological and immunohistochemical biomarkers. 4. 24. The hematopoietic transcription factor RUNX1 : a structural view

    Author : Stefan Bäckström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Molecular medicine; RUNX1; Runt domain; CBFβ; transcription factor; leukaemia; protein crystallography; anomalous diffraction; Molekylärmedicin; Molecular medicine genetics and pathology ; Molekylär medicin genetik och patologi ; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The malfunction of the transcriptional regulator RUNX1 is the major cause of several variants of acute human leukemias and its normal function is to regulate the development of the blood system in concert with other transcriptional co-regulators. RUNX1 belongs to a conserved family of heterodimeric transcription factors that share a conserved DNA binding domain, the Runt domain (RD), named after the first member of this group – Runt - found in Drosophila melanogaster. 5. 25. Transcription Factor AP-2 in Relation to Personality and Antidepressant Drugs

    Author : Cecilia Berggård; Lars Oreland; Göran Engberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacology; Transcription factors; serotonin; AP-2; antidepressants; CNS; personality; Farmakologi; Pharmacological research; Farmakologisk forskning;

    Abstract : The CNS monoaminergic systems are considered as the head engine regulating neuropsychiatric functions and personality. Transcription factor AP-2 is known to be essential for the development of the brainstem including the monoaminergic nuclei, and has the ability to regulate many genes in the monoaminergic systems.
