  1. 1. Actin and myosin in transcriptional and post-transcriptional control of gene expression

    Author : Ales Obrdlik; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Actin plays a key role in basal gene regulation. In the past decade actin has been found to be a component of chromatin remodeling complexes, ribonucleoprotein particles and to associate with all eukaryotic RNA polymerases. READ MORE

  2. 2. Metabolic Significance of Fatty Acid Elongation

    Author : Damir Zadravec; Anders Jacobsson; Douglas Tocher; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; Fysiologi; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : Very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), including polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), are essential lipids whose functional diversity is made possible by variation in their chain length and degree of unsaturation. Fatty acids can either be derived directly from the diet or they can be synthesized de novo through lipogenesis, up to 16 carbons in length by fatty acid synthase. READ MORE

  3. 3. Gene regulation during development by chromatin and the Super Elongation Complex

    Author : Olle Dahlberg; Mattias Mannervik; Peter Gergen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila development; gene regulation; transcription; chromatin; P-TEFb; Super Elongation Complex; KDM4A; H3K36me3; H3K14ac; histone replacement; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : Developmental processes are carefully controlled at the level of transcription to ensure that the fertilized egg develops into an adult organism. The mechanisms that controls transcription of protein-coding genes ultimately ensure that the Pol II machine synthesizes mRNA from the correct set of genes in every cell type. READ MORE

  4. 4. Transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) expression : the role of histone modification and alternative splicing

    Author : Zheng Ge; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Telomerase, an RNA-dependent DNA polymerase responsible for telomeric DNA elongation, is silent in most normal differentiated human cells due to the tight repression of its catalytic unit, telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT), whereas constitutive hTERT expression and telomerase activation are prerequisites for cellular immortalization/malignant transformation. As reconfiguration of chromatin acts like a master on/off switch, determining whether particular genes are active or inactive, the project was specifically designed to first elucidate molecular strategies that integrate diverse signalling pathways at the hTERT chromatin and consequently result in telomerase activation or repression in normal and malignant human cells. 5. 5. Transcriptional and epigenetic control of gene expression in embryo development

    Author : Ann Boija; Mattias Mannervik; Jerry L. Workman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Epigenetics; Cell specification; Drosophila embryo; Dorsal morphogen; CBP p300; Gene regulation; Chromatin; Promoter proximal Pol II pausing; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : During cell specification, temporal and spatially restricted gene expression programs are set up, forming different cell types and ultimately a multicellular organism. In this thesis, we have studied the molecular mechanisms by which sequence specific transcription factors and coactivators regulate RNA polymerase II (Pol II) transcription to establish specific gene expression programs and what epigenetic patterns that follows.
