  1. 1. The Entheses of the Medial Meniscns and Ligaments of the Knee Joint : Descriptive and Experimental Studies

    Author : Jizong Gao; Michael Benjamin; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : knee joint; meniscus; ligaments; insertion; enthesis; quantitative morphology; fibrocartilage; cement line; collagens; proteoglycans; nerve fibres; tensile strength; failure mode; transection; refixation; repair; healing; osteoarthrosis; histology; immunohistochemistry; biomechanics; rabbit model; MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Meniscal injuries are common in sports. Surgical removal of the meniscus to relieve symptoms is associated with a high risk for late knee joint osteoarthrosis and pain. Meniscal repair or replacement has therefore been advocated. READ MORE

  2. 2. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord

    Author : Lina Pettersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; trk; spinal cord; sensory neuron; rat; PAC1; PACAP; ORL1; OFQ N; neurotrophin; neuropeptide; nerve transection; nerve compression; inflammatory pain; BDNF; DRG;

    Abstract : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-). 4. 4. Peripherally administered choleocystokinin-8 increases neurotrophins in the brain

    Author : Paola Tirassa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : NGF; BDNF; CCK-8; glutamate; GABA; CCK receptors; hypothamalus; hippocampus; Choline Acetyltransferase; fimibria-fornix transection; vagotomy; vagal stimulation; RT-PCR; ELISA;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to test the hypothesis that the gastric hormone Cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) can modulate the production of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in the brain. NGF is the first discovered and the best characterized neurotrophic factor which plays a crucial role in the survival and development of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons (BFCN). READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of CGRP expression in rat spinal motoneurons

    Author : Fredrik Piehl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : immunohistochemistry; in situ hybridization; motoneuron; axotomy; peptides; CGRP; trophic factor; FGF; IGF; BDNF; CNTF; GAP-43; cell culture; plasticity; mRNAregulation; regeneration;

    Abstract : The normal distribution and lesion-induced changes in the expression of neuropeptides and growth-related proteins, with special reference to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP),were studied in the motor system of the rat. In addition, factors that influence the expression of CGRP in motoneurons were identified. READ MORE
