11. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique
Abstract : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. READ MORE

12. Annular dynamics of the human heart : novel echocardiographic approaches to assess ventricular function
Abstract : The complex myocardial fiber architecture of the left ventricle (LV) enables long-axis motion (annular excursion), short-axis motion and also a small torsional deformation throughout the cardiac cycle. The contribution of the long-axis motion has proven to be important in generating ventricular filling and emptying, and the analysis of annular excursion has become a well established diagnostic tool for the assessment of ventricular function. 13. Vascular function in bicuspid aortic valve disease
Abstract : The aortic valve normally consists of three cusps (tricuspid aortic valve, TAV), but in 0.5-2% of the population it consists of only two cusps (bicuspid aortic valve, BAV), which is the most common congenital cardiac malformation. READ MORE

14. Aortic valve imaging - Towards new standards in prosthetic valve endocarditis
Abstract : Background: Aortic prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is a disease with high mortality, and diagnosis is difficult. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) has been the mainstay imaging modality in the diagnostic workup, but TEE has diagnostic shortcomings. Thus, new imaging methods might improve the diagnostic workup of PVE. READ MORE

15. Atherosclerosis of the ascending aorta as a risk factor for stroke after cardiac surgery : a study based on epiaortic ultrasound
Abstract : Postoperative stroke is a dreaded problem in cardiac surgery and atherosclerosis of the ascending aorta (AAA) is an important risk factor. The risk from calcified AAA, the extent and the topography of the disease in the development of stroke was evaluated. READ MORE
