16. Transient control in low-voltage power installation networks and electronic systems
Abstract : Transient protection in a low-voltage power installation network and an electronic system isof vital importance since most of the activities of our society are very dependent on thereliability of low-voltage power installation networks and electronic systems. This thesisconcentrates upon several investigations which all deal with the evaluation and improvementof the protection measures of low-voltage power installation networks and electronic systemsagainst electrical transients. 17. Static and Dynamic Load Response of the Lumbar Spine in Flexion
Abstract : The aims of this study were to develop experimental methods for static and dynamic loading of spinal segments in vitro that would simulate flexion-distraction injuries (lap seat-belt injuries) and increase knowledge about the biomechanical response and the mechanisms of injury of the lumbar spine under static and dynamic (transient) loads in flexion. The experiments were carried out on the lumbar functional spinal unit (FSU) consisting of two adjacent vertebrae, the intervertebral disc and all intervening ligaments. READ MORE

18. Impact damping and airplane towing : two studies of the response of solid bodies to transient loads
Abstract : The impact of a linearly elastic hammer on a linearly viscoelastic plate is the first problem considered in this thesis. The results, obtained by using the Laplace transformation method, can be used in the design of impact protection devices. READ MORE

19. Numerical simulation of thermomechanically coupled transient rolling contact - An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian approach
Abstract : Numerical simulation of rolling contact serves as an important complement to laboratory and full-scale testing in the endeavour to further the understanding of related physical mechanisms, e.g. the influence of friction on the rolling motion, the thermomechanical interaction, damage phenomena and related modes of failure. 20. Evaluation of a Variable Nozzle Turbine Turbocharger on a Diesel Engine under Steady and Transient Conditions
Abstract : The growing global call for reduced emissions and fuel consumption together with the market call for engines with higher power density and application-oriented torque curves can be met using turbochargers with variable geometry turbines (VGT). The second generation of VGT turbochargers is currently being developed and is starting to appear on the market. READ MORE
