  1. 1. Mapping Primary Production for the West African Sahel with Satellite Data

    Author : Jonathan Seaquist; Institutionen för naturgeografi och ekosystemvetenskap; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical geography; Sahel; CENTURY; Monte Carlo; GPP; transpiration; LUE; CLAVR; PAR; compositing; MVC; geostatistics; noise; NDVI; NOAA AVHRR; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : A light Use Efficiency (LUE) model is developed that allows the mapping of total growing season Gross Primary Production (GPP) for the West African Sahel, using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) together with other data. Image quality may be poor in monthly NDVI maximum value composites as shown by an improved geostatistical noise estimation technique. READ MORE

  2. 2. Soil Management Strategies to Establish Vegetation and Groundwater Recharge when Restoring Gravel Pits

    Author : Karin Palmqvist Larsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : groundwater protection; soil physical properties; CoupModel; unsaturated conductivity; water retention; transpiration; soil evaporation;

    Abstract : The removal of vegetation and overburden changes the naturalwater purifying processes and thus decreases the groundwaterprotection in gravel pit areas. The sand and gravel depositsusedfor aggregate extraction in Sweden are also often valuablefor extraction of groundwater as a drinking water resource. READ MORE

  3. 3. Spring water stress in Scots pine: interaction of snow and soil temperature

    Author : Per-Erik Mellander; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Low temperature; soil warming; transpiration; root water uptake; carbon dioxide assimilation; soil frost; silvicultural practice; Pinus Sylvestris; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : Water use and net carbon assimilation during spring was examined on Scots pine trees exposed to different soil warming dynamics in the field. Sap flow, needle water potential and net carbon assimilation were measured on trees that were exposed to a wide range of soil temperature regimes caused by manipulating the snow cover on tree-scale soil plots.     Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Agriculture development; food production; per capita food supply; consumptive water use; evaporation; transpiration; hydro-climatic variability; blue water resource; green water resource; irrigation; river depletion; river basin closure; adaptive water management; vegetal and animal foods; Jordbruksutveckling; matproduktion; per capita mattillgång; konsumerande vattenanvändning; evaporation; transpiration; hydroklimatisk variabilitet; blåvattenresurs; grönvattenresurs; bevattning; uttorkning av vattendrag; överintecknade avrinningsområden; anpassad vattenhantering; vegetarisk och animalisk föda.; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : Water constraints for humans and nature are gaining more and more public attention as a critical environmental dilemma that needs to be addressed. When aquifers and rivers are running dry, the debate refers to an ongoing “world water crisis”. READ MORE
