11. Xenograft Rejection : A Study of Cytokine mRNA Expression in Experimental Models
Abstract : Acute cellular xenograft rejection of ICCs triggered mRNA expression of proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1b and TNF-a), Th1 associated cytokines (IL-12p40, IL-2 and IFN-g) and Th2 associated cytokines (IL-4 and IL-10). The peak values and the kinetics of the mRNA expression indicated that acute cellular xenograft rejection is enhanced by the proinflammatory response and mediated by the Th1 associated response, whereas the function of the Th2 associated response most likely is to counteract the Th1 associated cytokines and thereby inhibit bystander damage by the delayed type hypersensitivity like rejection process. 13. Properties of Endothelium and its Importance in Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans
Abstract : Transplantation of insulin producing cells is currently the only cure for type 1 diabetes. However, even though the Edmonton protocol markedly increased the success rate of pancreatic islet transplantation, the long term insulin independence is still very poor. An adequate engraftment is critical for islet graft survival and function. READ MORE

14. Neogenesis and alloxan toxicity in pancreatic islets, with special reference to the transplanted human β-cell
Abstract : The aim of this work was to study whether adult human pancreatic β-cells have the capacity to proliferate in culture and after transplantation to the renal subcapsular space of mice. An immunosuppressive regimen for human islet discordant xenotransplantation to mice was designed. READ MORE

15. Investigations of Strategies to Counteract Proinflammatory Cytokines in Experimental Type 1 Diabetes
Abstract : Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease targeted against the pancreatic β-cells. Proinflammatory cytokines are considered to play a major role in the destruction of the insulin-producing β-cells. This thesis studied strategies to counteract proinflammatory cytokines in experimental T1D. READ MORE
