  1. 1. Mating type switching and transcriptional silencing in Kluyveromyces lactis

    Author : Emad Barsoum; Åström Stefan; Laura Rusche; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Mating type switch; transcriptional silencing; alpha3; transposase; Ume6; Mts1; Ras; cAMP; K. lactis; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology;

    Abstract : To explore the similarities and differences of regulatory circuits among budding yeasts, we characterized the role of unscheduled meiotic gene expression 6 (UME6) and a novel mating type switching pathway in Kluyveromyces lactis. We found that Ume6 was required for transcriptional silencing of the cryptic mating-type loci HMLα and HMRa. READ MORE

  2. 2. Co-operative recombination mechanisms promoting gene clustering and lateral transfer of antibacterial drug resistance

    Author : Masood Kamali-Moghaddam; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmaceutical biosciences; Tn5090 Tn402; Mu-like transposons; serine recombinases; res site; integrons; Farmaceutisk biovetenskap; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; Pharmaceutical Microbiology; farmaceutisk mikrobiologi;

    Abstract : Transposons of the Mu superfamily are widespread and have been shown to play an important role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance among microorganisms. One of these elements, Tn5090/Tn402 is the basal vehicle of the type 1 integrons in which mobile resistance gene cassettes are inserted to form clusters and operons. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation and mechanism of mating-type switching in Kluyveromyces lactis

    Author : Naghmeh Rajaei; Stefan Åström; Kenneth Wolfe; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; yeast; mating-type switching; DSB; gene conversion; transposable elements; RAS cAMP pathway; nutrient limitation; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Transposable elements (TEs) have had immense impact on the structure, function and evolution of eukaryotic genomes. The work in this thesis identified Kat1, a novel domesticated DNA transposase of the hAT family in the yeast Kluyveromyces lactis. Kat1 triggers a genome rearrangement that results in a switch of mating type from MATa to MATα. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cell-penetrating peptides as delivery vectors for oligonucleotides and proteins : Studies on applications and toxicity

    Author : Peter Järver; Ülo Langel; Gilles Divita; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurochemistry; Neurokemi; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : Cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs) have for a little bit more than a decade been employed as delivery vectors for a wide range of cargoes, ranging from gold particles to entire plasmids. Although CPP are well studied and utilized in numerous publications, our knowledge about CPP mediated transport is still poor. READ MORE

  5. 5. Integrative Modeling of Epigenetic Regulation in Human Disease

    Author : Xi Lu; Xingqi Chen; Chandrasekhar Kanduri; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Glioblastoma; Cross-species; Glioblastoma stem cell; Dravet syndrome; ATAC-seq; Single-cell multi-omics technology;

    Abstract : Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor. Standard of treatment prove ineffective, leading to tumor recurrence and an average survival rate of 14 months. This treatment resistance is attributed to both inter-tumor and intra-tumor heterogeneity observed across diverse tumor samples and within individual cells. READ MORE
